Here We Go Again

Now here is a story that will bear watching. US troops today turned over control of Haiti to a multi-national peacekeeping force from the UN.

I sense another UN-Kluster-Phuk&trade in the making, just like the mess the UN has created in the Balkans and several African countries. How much do you want to bet the US will be forced to send in the troops to Haiti within ten years? How about five years?

Here's how it starts: The United Nations says there will be 6,700 troops and 1,622 civilian police from 30 countries, led by 1,200 Brazilian troops.

Promises, promises .... here is the reality: Bright flags of about two dozen participating nations dot empty barracks at the airport but only samples of the blue U.N. hats and berets arrived prior to Tuesday.

The departing American General had this to say: "If you ask me whether we accomplished the mission, the answer is yes, but given the choice, everyone would volunteer to stay," Coleman said. "Haiti has been beaten up a whole lot."

The Haitian people had this to say: Some Haitians are skeptical. "I don't understand what they're coming to do yet," said Marie Andre, 31, from the southern village of Fond Verrettes, one of the towns worst affected by the floods. "If they're supposed to provide security, where are they?"

The UN forces will be commanded by a Brazilian General who had this to say: Brazil's private Agencia Estado news agency reported Monday that Heleno is worried about the mission. "General Heleno has one preoccupation," the agency said. "There is no definition yet of which forces will make up the mission."

I can't decide if this situation is FUBAR or FUBARBE, but I do know the people of Haiti are convinced it is BOHICA time again.

Stay tuned and keep your eyes on Haiti.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
  1. Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
  2. Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
  3. Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
  4. Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.
