He might be for reals!
Us folks here in the red corners of True Blue New Jersey have been keeping our fingers crossed about our new governor. While The Fat Guy In Trenton, Chris Christie, is without doubt a true fiscal conservative, we haven’t really known whether he is a real Conservative conservative. Hey, this is joisey, m’kay? A state where “middle of the road” Republicans are left leaning Democrats. RINOS are not any kind of endangered species in this state at all.
But ... there may be hope for this guy Christie. Even if he isn’t fully dipped in Red, at least he has the guts to Do The Right Thing. And that’s often just as good if not better. Case in point:
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie gave the Aitken family all they wanted for Christmas Monday.
Christie signed a letter ordering Brian Aitken, a New Jersey man sentenced to seven years in jail for having weapons he legally purchased in Colorado, to be released from Mid-State Correctional Facility as soon as possible.
Aitken, 27, was sentenced in August to seven years after a January 2009 arrest at his parent’s home in Mount Laurel, Burlington County. Aitken’s mother called the police on him after he was distraught over a custody issue and police found handguns, hollow point bullets, and high capacity magazines in a box in the trunk of his car.
Aitken claimed he was protected under a state exemption because he was moving from Mount Laurel to Hoboken at the time. A Burlington County judge refused to allow the jury to see the exemptions, claiming Aitken’s defense team did not present enough evidence during the trial to show he was moving.
Aitken’s father, Larry, could barely speak when reached Monday, but thanked “Governor Chris Chringle.”
Christie ordered that Aitken, a media consultant, entrepreneur and graduate student, be released as soon as “administratively possible.” His father believes it might be take up to 72 hours for his son to walk out of the medium-security prison near Fort Dix.
Aitken’s attorney, Evan Nappen, praised the governor for using common sense in a case that “cried out for it.”
”Governor Christie is a hero to gun owners across the nation,” he said.
On Jan. 2, 2009, Aitken became despondent when his ex-wife canceled a visit with their young son and left his parents’ Mount Laurel home in his car. His mother, a social worker, called the police out of concern and they searched his car when he returned and found handguns, locked and unloaded, in the trunk along with hollow-point bullets and high-capacity magazines.
Aitken, who purchased the guns in Colorado when he lived there, claimed that he was permitted to have the guns in his car because of a moving exemption. Witnesses had testified that Aitken was in the process of moving from Mount Laurel to Hoboken, Nappen said.
Nappen said former Burlington County Superior Court Judge James J. Morley denied three requests from the jury to see the exemptions. Morley and the Burlington County Prosecutor’s Office said Aitken did not present enough evidence to prove he was moving.
Nappen said he didn’t think Christie, a former U.S. Attorney who wasn’t known as a gun-rights proponent, was thinking national politics when he made the decision. “The governor made the right decision for the right reasons,” he said.
So Aitken’s sentence was commuted, not nullified, annulled, or pardoned. That means he’s still a felon on paper, but at least he’s out of pedo-prison at For Dicks. Seeing as the judge in the case was disbarred for being a fucking whack job, Aitken’s chances for appeal/retrial/mistrial seem pretty good.
Merry Christmas Brian Aitken.

Not that very many people ever read this far down, but this blog was the creation of Allan Kelly and his friend Vilmar. Vilmar moved on to his own blog some time ago, and Allan ran this place alone until his sudden and unexpected death partway through 2006. We all miss him. A lot. Even though he is gone this site will always still be more than a little bit his. We who are left to carry on the BMEWS tradition owe him a great debt of gratitude, and we hope to be able to pay that back by following his last advice to us all:
It's been a long strange trip without you Skipper, but thanks for pointing us in the right direction and giving us a swift kick in the behind to get us going. Keep lookin' down on us, will ya? Thanks.
- Keep a firm grasp of Right and Wrong
- Stay involved with government on every level and don't let those bastards get away with a thing
- Use every legal means to defend yourself in the event of real internal trouble, and, most importantly:
- Keep talking to each other, whether here or elsewhere

Oh, and here's some kind of visitor flag counter thingy. Hey, all the cool blogs have one, so I should too. The Visitors Online thingy up at the top doesn't count anything, but it looks neat. It had better, since I paid actual money for it.
