  1. I guess free thought is not no longer a valuable attribute.

  4. What is it with the Left that has them move like this to silence dissent?

Could it be that their arguments are so tenuous that they won’t stand up to scrutiny?

Shame on the University of Delaware.  Shame on them all.

  5. Sounds like the Fighting Blue Hens have really crossed the road.

Free thought, safe kids, and a good education while not spending too much Plan:

    1) your high school kid gets a job and starts saving. They try for good grades but don’t nerd themselves out doing it. Learning to be popular is what high school is for, and that skill will keep you employed.

    2) after graduation she goes to the local community college and lives at home, meanwhile continuing to work and save.

    3) after picking up an Associate’s Degree, she goes to State and picks up a BA/BS in something not terribly demanding, but minors in what she wants to major in. You go 50/50 with her and get her a real live apartment of her own. One bedroom, off campus, not in the student slum area.

    4) If she still wants to pursue the learning, the BA in EasyNomics has generated a great GPA, so she can get in any grad school.

    5) 2 years later she enters the job market with a Masters and 2 other college degrees, and 4-5 years work experience. Having the MA gets her another $15,000 to start.

  6. That is the Chinese COMMUNIST self-criticism methodology.  You can see a mild form of one such session in the movie, The Last Emperor.  It forces the individual to reject oneself in public breaking down the ego.

  7. Here in OH the biggy is forcing (financially) all to go to public schools/colleges - the (D) Gov is attempting to remove any and all incentives (vouchers for lower grades, grants for college) so that all will be forced into public indoctrination, oops education camps, oops again - systems.

It is disgusting - but how about a lighter moment on just how deranged the left can be?!? My daughter is a sophmore in a private college. She is very active and presented to the Student Union (or whatever it is called) a request for funds to travel to Washington, DC for a - get this - global warming conference - the request was denied. Now the set up - this is primarily a Dem deal - but the Dems on campus have a weak President - so 12 of the 13 attending are Dems, my daughter who is spearheading it and submitted the request for funds (travel, hotel, etc) - is President of the College Republicans and yes, you guessed it - it was denied because she is a Republican!!!! Can we all say - intolerant, idiotic and stupid - liberals gone wild? As a result - 4 are now going - as the Political Studies dept came through with some $$$. They shot themselves in the foot, can not see it, will never admit it and if presented with it (evidence) deny, deny, deny. She actually wanted to quit - to find an even more conservative school - but has seen all of us pushing 5+ years just to get a degree because of switching schools. It is such a shame.

I am having problems with a coed dorm - but have to trust her to be able to fend for herself - I can’t imagine her being forced to adhere to the ‘liberal line’ just to get a degree.

  8. I don’t think colleges can ever recover from the leftist takeover. It will take another generation before they even admit that they are taken over, and another before they realize thats a problem. By that point they’ll all be speaking Farsi anyway.

Idealogical reeducation, Free Speech Zones, special groups/housing/funding for any and all groups other than white Christian males ... it’s too late.

What happens to the graduates? Does all this “learning” make them better workers better able to compete?

  9. Wardmama - considering your writing and what you and yours musta taught your daughter, I would lighten up on the worry and just stand tall behind her.  She’s got her own wind to sail by, and if she knows you back her like you do, she’ll make her own sound choices.

And methinks there are some - er, - less strong-willed or strong-minded individuals who will reap the results of your daughters’ wisdom.

I still get a giggle when my daughters tell me about professors trying to brow-beat them. The youngest daughter is in a profession where she, as a scientist, has (in my opinion way too much) contact with lawyers.  She considers them “fun to play with”, they are so simple minded. The kids grew up confident in themselves and willing to learn - and you impress me as teaching the same stuff.

Stand Tall, Be Proud. You’ve done well.

  10. Since I work in academia, I thought I might could provide some valuable perspective and commentary.  Namely:

The Orwellian program requires the approximately 7,000 students in Delaware’s residence halls to adopt highly specific university-approved views on issues ranging from politics to race, sexuality, sociology, moral philosophy, and environmentalism.

And at what cost to the academic freedom they supposedly stand for?  I’m not going to hold my breath waiting for the AAUP to take action on this (e.g. via censure), but it would sound reasonable to me that this might be in violation of AAUP policies/standards on academic freedom.

I’m not an AAUP member, so I’d have to do some reading and ask around to be 100% certain.  I do have a friend and colleague who is an AAUP member, so I will run this by her.

  11. And this:

At various points in the program, students are also pressured or even required to take actions that outwardly indicate their agreement with the university’s ideology, regardless of their personal beliefs. Such actions include displaying specific door decorations, committing to reduce their ecological footprint by at least 20%, taking action by advocating for an “oppressed” social group, and taking action by advocating for a “sustainable world.”

I actually have less of a problem with, as it provides an outlet for resourceful students who want to capitalize on this opportunity to “recognize the benefits of dismantling systems of oppression” and maybe even do something about it.

    To wit, they could:

    • “Display specific door decorations,” such as that of Pink Pistols, a pro-gun LGBT group.

    • “reduce their ecological footprint” by getting a bike (not a huge sacrifice on a college campus), driving less, protesting mass transit on campus (many universities operate bus systems, which a resourceful student could organize protests against, which would cause many hippy’s heads to explode.... always a good thing). They could also protest around the personal vehicles of [modern] liberal faculty members who have crappy old polluting cars and 60s-era VW vans that bear bumper stickers for the Green Party, for example.

    • “take action by advocating for an ‘oppressed’ social group,” such as gun owners, Republicans, etc.

    • do something minor to “advocate for a sustainable world,” while spending much more time/effort on the above-mentioned courses of action.

Or at least that’s what *I* would do, were I a Delaware U. student who wanted to highlight the idiocy of the administration’s social engineering program and actively work to undermine it.
