  1. Keep in mind that there are probably other earthquakes that move the overlying plate up more than they move the subducting plate down. Given that the overall mass/energy of the entire planet can’t change other than by radiating energy away (heat, tidal drag, etc.) I’d call it a near certainty that it balances out quickly. After all, the mass that was displaced has to go somewhere, no?

    Okay I take that back. The overall mass can change in another way too, by losing some of the planet’s actual mass. If you include atmosphere, that happens all the time. But relative to the mass of the entire system, any mass leaving will either be too small to make a measurable difference (the mass of a Saturn V leaving on a moon shot), or so big that there would be no one left to explain it to (a “dinosaur killer” asteroid knocked a piece of the world loose).
