A mate of mine has a similar unit on the roof of his office, on an old airfield (Davidstowe Moor) the place is as windy as hell, and he only has it as the cost of mains service was out of the question. he is there 3 part days a week and it does not really do enough! One thing when fitting a wind turbine the location on a roof might be important, the behavior of the wind in cities is unpredictable (in Canada The CN tower was built with lakes arround the base, sometimes the swirling wind emptied them! The big turbines are just the kings new clothes 2008.
BNFL (British Nuclear Fuel Ltd.) has a visitor site. In it they have an interesting exhibit. A bicycle hooked up to dynamo and a board with various electrical things. It’s amusing to see otherwise fit people peddle like buggery and only manage to light up a puny bulb. Anyone who lives in a normal house should be made to sit on one of these bikes and try to light a 60w bulb. Simple physics will soon educate them to the futility of wind power. It is being massively promoted in Europe because the electrity companies are getting huge tax kickbacks.
Like hybrid cars, consumers get huge remorse when they see the ACTUAL and truthful payback times on these devices. The greenies are promoting a lot of fairy-tale lies and can get quite belligerent when shown the true engineering numbers....
Nukes work. Geothermal works. Hydroelectric works. Tidal generators might work. These 4 work because the forces they convert to electricity are always there, or in the case of tidal, are always predictable. Wind turbines can do the job, but the wind itself is not dependable, or even dependably cyclic.
Um, peiper… I live on the US Gulf Coast… you know, the area that just got trashed by hurricane Ike? That’s why I haven’t been commenting much lately, I’ve been too busy getting downed trees outta my yard and off my fences. That and of course a week without power kinda dampened my posting.
Not bitchin, please understand. But… given what it’s like around here when the wind is 5m/sec or higher.... um, no, I don’t think I’ll do the windmills or turbines, thanks. The windy season around here is too likely to have tree parts stuffed into it. Somehow I get the feeling that having a coupla tons of bog oak slap the turbine at 50MPH+ might void the warranty.
