Who needs Osama?

We have enough terrorists of our own right here.

  1. My first thought after hearing about this was that the gun grabbers would exploit this for their own gains.  I do live in Nebraska, in Lincoln though, not Omaha.  If I’m not mistaken, it seems like that mall was a gun free zone too.  Not 100% sure on that one, been a while since I’ve been in Omaha (much less that mall) so I can’t say for certain.

  2. Sure, SKS rifles are fun to shoot, they don’t cost very much, and if yours is accurate past 125 yards you got totally lucky. But the rifle itself fails the definition of Assault Weapon don’t they? Wood stock, no pistol grip, no carrying handle, not even the military version had fully automatic capability, no flash hider or muzzle brake, many (most?) of them didn’t even have removable magazines. I don’t think one was ever made that even had a bayonet lug, since they usually had a fold away bayonet permanently attached.

I was just making the minor point that the press purposely doesn’t know Jack about guns. Had this sicko used a K98 Mauser, the press would have labeled it an assault rifle. Well, until somebody tipped them off, at which point it would become a Nazi assault rifle.

  3. When we had the AWB in effect, wasn’t there a laundry list of gun features that were used to make the determination? That’s why we have pre- and post- ban AR15s. I recall that it was like a Chinese take-out menu; if you had one from column A and one from column B you were Ok, but two from column B and you were banned. Pretty sure that a free standing pistol grip, bayonet lug, carrying handle, muzzle brake, and detachable magazine were some of the bad things in column B. Not sure about front handguards or integral bayonets; its a 5 minute net research project to find out.

  4. More like 5 seconds ...

From the text of the AWB:

    (B) a semiautomatic rifle that has an ability to accept a detachable magazine and has at least 2 of- (i) a folding or telescoping stock; (ii)a pistol grip that protrudes conspicuously beneath the action of the weapon; (iii)a bayonet mount; (iv) a flash suppressor or threaded barrel designed to accommodate a flash suppressor; and (v) a grenade launcher

California considers the “SKS with detachable magazine” an “assault weapon”. However, as noted above the typical SKS Carbine does not have a detachable magazine.

  5. John Lott already has a column addressing the ‘gun free zone’ condition of the mall.  (I found it on Fox News main page.) Sure enough, that sign protected all those people.

Y’know, if we just passed a law making it illegal to kill people, all this would be moot.  Laws fix all problems, right?

  6. Good one Archie - the hypocrisy and utter vapid stupidity of ‘gun ban laws’ is resounding. BTW, now they are calling it an AK47 - don’t know if this shows the utter lack of research/knowledge of the ‘scooping’ reporters or if they are so embarrassed at the pie on their face - they had to cover up their stupidity. . .

Either way, typical of the msm today - if it is a gun, it is dangerous and should be banned.
And that alone will end suicide and killing. . .

BTW, I have a real nice bridge for sale!

  7. Ratz, I’ve seen two KETV.com videos of the Omaha police chief, one where he calls it an SKS assault rifle, the other where he calls it an AK-47 assault rifle. We’ll never know until we see pictures, but in the big scheme of things it makes no difference at all.

  8. Crivens, the instant I put up the last comment, Fox starts showing pics from the security videos. It’s a blurry pic, and the two rifles are very hard to tell apart if you can only see the muzzle end, but it looks like his firing hand is rather low. That’s the grip you’d have if shooting a gun with a seperate pistol grip. So I’d say its an AK-47 after all.

  9. Man, after all these years of the media worshipping every sort of commie and terrorist (and the weapons used by them) you’d think that they’d recognize a damn Kalashnikov by now.
