I personally own a Kentucky long rifle replica, and I’ve fired two different Brown Bess replicas. I had no problem hitting a Baker target (upper torso silhouette), firing from the standing position, at a range of 50m. And when you’re throwing a .70-caliber lead ball downrange, it doesn’t matter where you hit the target.
While I could hit the same silhouette with the long rifle at 100m using a minie ball and freshly swabbed barrel, I doubt I could push it much further than 175m. The muskets also had the advantage of fire weight, in that they were much faster to reload than a rifled barrel, especially after that barrel had been fouled.
The British conquered the world with the Brown Bess, and there was nothing at all wrong with the weapon. The deficiency was entirely in the training and discipline of Santa Anna’s “army.” Remember, this is the guy that Sam Houston captured by walking through his lines and holding a pistol to his head while he was napping.
Mr. Mitchell needs to spend more time studying real history, and less time making up his own version of it.
