When You Are Old

  1. Christopher,

Good call on the Yeats poem.  When I was in college I set this poem and a couple of others to music in the form of an art song trilogy.

I was working on my Masters in Vocal Accompaniment at the time (yes, such a useful degree....) and my best client, an incredibly amazing soprano (and hot to boot) performed the entire set on her senior recital.  It was very well received and she sang them better than I could have hoped.

This particular one was my favorite of the three because of the richness of the words and the vividness of the imagery, and your post has taken me back to a cherished moment in my life.  Thanks for the memory jog.

It is proof of the power of this poem that 20 years later, it hits me emotionally even harder than it did back then, and the perspective of age, combined with the deaths of members of the family and some friends since then, has given a new twist on my own perspective of the poem.

  2. Thanks skymuse. I was seriously burned-out on Moonbattiness, yet I held off of posting a poem for three days. Didn’t think it would be received well. I finally decided to find out.
