... I lived in that neck of the woods.
There is a huge community of Iraqi/Irani/asst Muslims there. They run C-stores, ice cream trucks and cabs.
I will tell you this ... they are not our friends.
They look at us as demons to be tolerated inorder to make the money and use it for whatever.
They DO NOT donate to the Boy Scouts or Greenpeace.
A free country invites abuse of that freedom and there’s not a damned thing we can do about it without losing some of that freedom.

As an immigrant and naturalized citizen myself I’m sort of sensitive about immigrant bashing. I think that everyone deserves the same chance that I got in the land of opportunity.
However, if these people won’t assimilate and are working against my country I’ll be among the first there with a rope looking for a suitable tree.
America is a gift to the world, a chance for people to live free and enjoy the benefits of liberty and their own willingness to achieve, unencumbered by anything but their own limitations. To take advantage of this to try to destroy it is treachery and deserves the traitor’s end.
Yes, I suppose things have changed. My parents never went for their citizenship, they were afraid of the history questions. Didn’t feel that they knew enough. One brother did and the other one didn’t. He doesn’t want to spend the money. No, I’m not kidding. He’s a cheap bastard despite having more than the rest of us. He won’t even get a new green card because he won’t pay the fee. The only difference it makes is in voting. Everything else is the same. Although if he had been busted dealing he might have been deported. I’d have laughed my ass off at that.
The problem, as you point out, is that too many of the newcomers are just here to make money to send “home”. It’s Mexico’s 2nd largest source of income. Some have no intention of staying which isn’t altogether a bad thing.
I have no problem with bringing their culture and traditions with them. Lots of people have done that before them. I’m personally grateful for Italian food. It beats haggis, tripe or ‘black pudding’.
The problem will come when they want to force the rest of us into their culture. If they wanted that they should have stayed where the hell they were.
Oh, and most people learned English when they came here. I chose to learn French when I was in school. It came in handy when I was in France. I am NOT going to be forced to learn Spanish because some lazy bastard won’t learn English. It didn’t hurt the Poles, Hunkies or Italians I grew up with. It won’t hurt them. I get really pissed when I see government knuckling under to these
and printing multilingual pamphlets. Multilingual ballots really infuriate me. You’re supposed to be able to speak English to gain citizenship.
