You think he’s baffled? I understand the truck thing. I even understand the Wrentham thing, which is more important: it’s about as country an area as you can find in Massachusetts.
But what leaves me TOTALLY baffled is one of the comments left at that article:
In England you have to be ever so ever so careful about what chrome letters and numbers are on the back of your truck/car:-
A3, A4 or A8
3.16, 3.18, 3.23
GLS, GLT, SLT, BSGet these wrong, severally or jointly, and you could be a social pariah for the duration of the ownership of the vehicle.
What the blinkin’ tea and crumpets does THAT mean????
I think the A’s are freeways but I’m stumped on the others.
LYNDON .... ?
Drew, it is snobbery, this creeps name looks familiar, son of a politician, priveledged upbringing, probably went to Eton, etc, etc, dickhead. My wife, who is nearly cornish, family dates back hundreds of years in the UK, gave, as a condition of coming to Canada (the same place to journalists in England these days) that she has a truck, proper truck, not the little gay things in England (you can get silverados there though) she drives a GMC V8 extended cab 6.6 box pick up truck, 4X4 too! his problem might stem from going to private school with a name like Rifkind!
America is America. The envy of the freaking world. Take it or leave it, love it or leave it. Trucks is Trucks. Even the Japanese understand Trucks. I went to England once. I didn’t understand it very well, but I loved it, and it was a privilege to be there. You don’t need to understand America. Just enjoy it and be glad Americans are who they are.
I have a big Impeach Obama sticker on the back of my truck. Like I give a shit if that makes me a social pariah.
This gentleman has selective memory, or is just sloppy in his observations.
President Obama responded to Senator Elect Brown’s mention of driving a truck with 200,000 miles on it by labling the whole matter a publicity stunt.
That’s the reason for Senator Elect Brown to offer to show the truck to the President. Mr. Rifkind doesn’t understand.
His column goes on to say he sees the information Global Warming is a hoax, but doesn’t give much credence to the people who oppose the hoax. In other words, if it doesn’t fit into his prejudice, he doesn’t hear it.
Mr. Rifkind isn’t baffled. He doesn’t know enough to be baffled. Standard liberal ignorninny.
It’s just a way to be snarky about Americans that he seems to think hasn’t been tried. He’s trying to be a clever boy and failing miserably. It’s not that he really doesn’t “get” the truck thing. But if he truly doesn’t get the truck as a symbol of non-elitism then he’s showing nothing but his own failure at comprehension. Then again, that would be nothing new for his ilk, though.
