Ok, I knew. But only because I posted a few months, when gas prices were $4 that most of the “new” ideas for saving gas, higher mpg cars, alternative energy etc were all part of Carter’s “malaise” speech from the summer of 1979.
I think DOE was set up at first to deal with nukes in all forms, from weapons to reactors to dealing with the spent fuel rods. This was 2 years before the essentially harmless accident at Three Mile Island (no deaths, no radiation poisoning, no cancer cases even 30 years later, and only miniscule fallout). They have their hand in a bunch of cookie jars that are energy related via their stepchild the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, and they also fund a couple dozen research labs. And these days they’re in charge of computer security too. Go figure.
Wiki them up. While I’m sure they’re too big for their britches and waste cash left and right just like every other branch of the gov, at first glance it does look like they’re doing what they ought to be doing. DOE is an umbrella org; before DOE there were several little government agencies that each did their piece of the pie. In theory under DOE they’re all coordinated and communicating. (Jamie Gorelick never worked for them)
Turn the banking industry over to them? That’ll be the cat’s meow, won’t it?
Not to mention the upcoming “Department of Full and Universal Health Care”. In the words of Jeff Foxworthy, “No thanks, I’ll just die.”
Carter also established the Department of Education in ‘78 or ‘79. That was a blatant payback to the NEA.
Certainly the Dept. of Education hasn’t educated anyone since then. Look at the results of the last elections.
BTW, somehow, I managed to graduate high school without a Dept. of Education. So did my parents, so did my grandparents, etc. Why are we wasting taxpayer monies on a useless, unionized, thug organization like the NEA?
