  1. A nice .22 shot to the head will fix that cheeky little bugger.

The Groundhog/Wild Animal Wars are back on in spades - saw another Fatboy twice yesterday and he is faster than the other two were. And then the second time when I went to check the garden (we have two melons about to be ripe) someone had chewed through the netting and ate all the grapes - damn and damn it all to hell. This is war.

David’s Dr. also had a groundhog problem - he poured a little gas down the holes (apparently ruining his backyard) and then added a couple of firecrackers. He had a neighbor who sat in his second story window and picked them off. Now that is certainly worse than ours and we haven’t found any holes/tunnels yet - of course there is a big preserve behind us - so they could be anywhere.

My hubby gave the daughter a shoot to kill permission (.22 loaded with varmint rounds). The trap is set - the next skirmish is on.

  2. Well, if you’re considering going to extremes ... all out thermonuclear war ...

The Aguila Interceptor .22LR shoots a full size 40gr bullet more than 200fps faster than any other .22LR ammo. The extra velocity adds 50% more power, so this ammo should really thump those woodchucks at backyard ranges. I just ordered 3 bricks myself. Aguila is having production troubles right now, so this stuff will be hard to find very soon.

If you want to go all the way to DEFCON 5, here is a tool that reshapes the bullet nose, allowing it to expand much more than a regular hollowpoint but still penetrate. You would want tool #1

And a review of the tool ...

Assuming daughter’s rifle is sighted in for backyard distances, either or both of these options should leave you woodchunks instead of woodchucks. Neither is strictly necessary, since a .22LR HP should do the job on a 15lb ‘chuck at 25 yards, especially if she can get a head shot. Just instruct daughter to treat Mr. Chuck as if it was a lion: shoot, hit, and keep shooting until it’s absolutely, positively dead.
