  1. Gee how 60’s. I remember in high school civics they floated that cure for all social ills. Yep just eliminate poverty and we’ll all sing “Kumbiya, by the camp fire”.

You know they made some real moves to do just that and frankly being poor today is a whole lot better than it was 40 years ago. Still sucks I’m sure, but hey you want out of poverty you got to work at it. The where with all to do that abound today, so use it.

Only problem is it didn’t solve the problem, hell it even made some new ones. My personal favorite is the permanent welfare class and their keepers. ;-(

In my humble opinion the only answer is get a real job. Nothing empowers like a pay check.

I’m breaching to the choir here but make the system encourage investment to create real jobs and get the people employed. That is one tactic that will win the War on Poverty.

  2. There is something to said for the dole… don’t see any seething domestic terror groups among the “impoverished” in the good ol USA do you?  Nope… they’re all fat and happy!  No fertile recruiting grounds for the nutcases here.

    Too bad, heh!

  3. Benazir Bhutto is full of shit, the terrorists are funded by wealth, not poverty, the terrorists themselves are usually the better educated of the population that will dupe the rest into doing their bidding, they want power and dominance. Poverty is a chronic problem where dictatorial governments exist, if people are scuffling to eek out a living they don’t have time or resources to buck the system. Most of the problems abroad, like here, come from the establishments of higher learning which seem to be invariably left leaning and radical. Whether these schools are secular or religeous the result is the same, do to being brainwashed by their teachers the students demand irrational changes to their society that cannot be peacefully achieved. Terrorism starts at the learning level and that’s a good place to stem it.
Hold those teachers and professors accountable as well as those that fund them.

  4. I wonder if the former Prime Minister understands poverty.

Does she (yes the former Prime Minister is a she… I was there with the Navy when she was in power...) know that in the United States, our ‘poverty level’ is higer than most middle-class Europeans?

Poverty cannot be eradicated. Why? Because poverty is a relative measure. The Bible says: ‘The poor shall always be with you’ ... or something like that. Why? Because someone will always be ‘poorer’ than you.

Enough of my economic moralizing. The former Prime Minister just wants the West to funnel more funds to her depleted bank accounts. None of it will seep down to her ‘subjects’.
