  1. Here’s an idea:

    Hold the actual ceremony separately from the signing of the legal contract of marriage at the office of the registrar.

    This should please everyone once they’ve had time to adjust to this method:  The state apparatchiks get their paperwork without the uncomfortable ceremonial extras, and the actual marriage ceremony can have all of its pageantry without being interrupted by “the signing of the state paperwork” which has the feel and awkwardness of a “TV-Timeout” when you’re attending a sports event in person.

    There I go, being too damned sensible again.

  3. Too religious? Pray tell, what religion did the ceremony refer to? I read it as the couple in question plighting their troth to each other. No religion required. Just a promise in public before a secular representative of the gov’t.
