She does raise a valid point: they will continue to turn to piracy if that is the best way they can earn a living. If we are looking to make a long term solution happen in Somalia we will have to provide some alternative means of making a living, or the sheer economics of the situation will continue to grow pirates like daisies. It’s a risk/reward equation that can be solved, but not by military means alone. IMHO.

So it should be given to them… The Somalis will NOT be able to advance until such
time as they stop their internal wars and make a unified government. They seemed to do well when they were being ran by the Italians and British. HOWEVER now they are being ran by a ‘transitional government’ that refuses to die or hand over the reins of power to anything permanent, not that anyone has tried to make anything that will last.It is a country of constant warfare, ran by ‘warlords’ who care for nothing but themselves and their cadres. There is NO way to do as Pompey did, and give them all a small holding (in an arid land) of property and let them ‘make an honest living for themselves’. They have holdings.. This is where they base their little pirate bands.
We should quarantine this country COMPLETELY, no communications out, no boats out, no planes out, and let them solve their problems the best way they know how (AK-47 and RPG-7s probably). They are acting like they did 100 years ago before the Italian and British empires took them over, like tribes, but now with automatic weapons.
The care shipments (which Capt. Phillips’ ship had) for them, seem to get split up between the warlords and doled out according to the person’s favor, should CEASE completely until they decide to accept civilization.
This is getting tiring.

This is not “the best way they can EARN a living"*. They have turned to crime. On purpose. They could farm. They could fish. They could try getting some foreign capital from the UN or somebody to set up a factory. Maybe they could mine something. All of those solutions require hard work, time, a possibly learning some skills. Hell, they could try moving to NY or London and driving a taxi, like every other immigrant on the face of the earth.
Instead they have elected to steal.
Best way my ass. They have chosen the path of sin, and they will pay the price. Now, and later.
The western world is NOT responsible for their mess. The eastern world is NOT responsible for their mess. THEY ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR THEIR OWN MESS. And they’ve done jack shit about improving it for ... what, 20 years now? Screw that. All they want to do is fight and rob.
Clinton tried to help these people out. He sent them millions in aid. And look what we got for it: our soldiers dead in the streets, mutilated and their bodies dragged behind trucks on international TV. A horror for which we have never been avenged.
Somalia needs help? Then help them to die. Help them all.
* (no, I’m not picking on Guido. He is only repeating what I’ve heard hundreds of others say)
The Solution to the Piracy problem has Two Parts.
1. The Short Term Solution is to Kill them whenever and whereever they are found.
2. The Long Term Solution is to See If they are willing to Foreswear Piracy for a Peaceful life,
If Not, See Number 1.Send in the case managers, job development specialists and anger management therapists, we’ll pay for it with a new Somali Stimulus package.
Or send in the carpenters, because that’s a whole lot of 6X6’s they got to nail together.
