We have a Pope

  1. It is Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger.  He chose the name Benedict XVI.

  2. That was quick!

  3. Interesting choice. Last time a Benedict was Pope was during World War I.

  4. Meaning no disrespect, but its a pity it didn’t take longer. I was enjoying the absence of Michael J on the news.

But I guess congrats are in order for all catholics.

  5. Also meaning no disrespect, but 78?!?  Looks like we’ll be doing this again in the next decade.

  6. 78?

Now I understand why they hurried.

  7. I’ll second that thought David
And I’ve got a bone to pick-with no one affiliated with THIS blog.
Right after JPII’s death certain ‘Christian’
blogs started dogpiling on the Pope’s memory because catholicismwas/is in their ‘fundamentalist’ minds not truely christian.

The man’s body was still warm and they were shreiking like Martin Luther.

    Gimmee a break.
If you believe in Christ as Savior then you’re a Christian

JPII was a good man and christian and they just couldn’t let him be.
Of course I’m just a Jewish born Protestant so what do I know.
    ///sarcasm OFF.

  8. This German cat, Ratzinger, (Benedict now, I guess) sounds all right.  I saw last night on the news a little clip of one of his speeches given in the past few days.

He was saying that he believes the Church must fight against encroachment of secularism and the belief that gratification of one’s personal desires are the purpose of existence.  I concur wholeheartedly.

My uncle, who is Catholic, was telling me also that Benedict is in favor of allowing priests to marry.  I hope they can change that.

Priests were allowed to marry for over a thousand years of the Church’s history!  There is no explicit basis in scripture for this rule, and allowing priests to marry again would go light years toward eliminating the scourge of perverts who gravitate toward that calling.

  9. The only reason that they stop letting priests get married was to avoid paying pensions to their widows, or so I have heard.

  10. Didn’t Paul say that it is better to be celibate, but if not, then one should marry?  Which says to me that there is a choice about marriage, with a recommendation, but not an absolute prohibition.

BTW, I’m waiting for the howls from the usual suspects about Benedict’s conservative dogmatism, how he won’t “reach out” to (name your favorite group of me-first whiners) in order to be more inclusive, etc.

What is even more irritating is that even though many of the commentators aren’t even church-goers, never mind Catholic, they feel qualified to preach about matters the Pope has spent a lifetime studying and praying over.

  11. ALT,

Don’t look now, but the folks over at *spit* Daily Kos *spit* are already crapping on the new Pope, in fine Liberal style.

I am not a religious person, but this sucks mightily. Christ, the white smoke hasn’t even cleared yet.

  12. Today is my mom’s birthday.

Since it’s synonymous (sp?) with some rather bad events (Waco standoff ends, OK City bombing) she was hoping at the very least for no major bad stuff to happen today.

But even better, we get a new Pope.

One who, at age 14, was forced to join the Hitler Youth. Shortly after he turned 18, he deserted the German Army, knowing full well if he were found by the SS he’d be either shot on the spot or hanged from a lightpost.

Just the mere announcement of his being named Pope is driving most liberals absolutely nuts. Last year, he told American bishops that it was allowable to deny Communion to those who support such “manifest grave sin” as abortion and euthanasia. (Take that Kerry! *spit*)

So I say first of all, Happy Birthday Mom. And God Bless our new Pope Benedict XVI.

  13. Severa,
1st-Happy birthday to your mom .smile

Also speaking as the resident Joooooo-
while some moonbat sites have started referring to Ratzinger as the Nazi pope and other terms of endearment-I have NO problem with the new Pontif’s past.

He HAD to join the Hitler Youth and did what he could to avoid being drafted into the SS.

I’ve noticed that for once most of the main- stream Jewish groups agree with me.

While I’m a theologically liberal-only THEOLOGICALLY-Jewish Christian I congratulate Cardinal Ratzinger on being elected and I hope God will bless him during his tenure!

oh and while I’m probably damned for this I’ll say it anyway-When Ratzinger was younger he was a real fox-and he’s still handsome now.
He’s got an impish grin too.
    smile heart

  15. Good Lord, now the Twerp is trying out for Mrs. Benedict XVI. Down girl! (BTW, visited your blog this morning. Like the avatar you have there. Why not use it on BMEWS?)

FJBill, maybe I just took this the wrong way, but start your own what kind of religion? Poor choice of words…

  16. OCM-the Late Pope was part of the resistance.
His best childhood friend-who survived and JPII remained close to throught out his life-was/is Jewish.
