  1. I probably should mention, I grew up on a farm. Mostly it was ‘farmed’ out to a big company who planted corn or soy beans. They switched every year. But we still had the chickens. Had to collect the eggs every morning. And feed them, and water them. And every so often, one of them would grace our oven. Trust me, the last thing you ever wanna do after you come home from high school is pluck a chicken. This song just takes me back. There was a girl, and I do remember Mom catching us in the barn. grin

  2. Sitting here with a big smile. Oh yeah, there were days like that many years ago.

  3. I didn’t grow up on a farm exactly - in it’s hey day it had been a farm - the original farm house and huge (I mean huge - two story, giant garage (probably as big as the house we live in now)) barn were still on the property. My grandfather built his ‘big’ house in 1931 - it was huge too (two apartments in it) and my grandmother made him give my dad land to build a house (second one, the first farm was given to my dad for $1.00 to keep him from moving to Seattle). But we had horses, dogs and cats, while I was growing up.

I worked in a chicken farm during my summers - a great learning experience. Anyway - with all the cousins and friends - waaay too many kids around to get caught in any barn/room or compromising position. And by that time my Uncle, Grandparents and Dad had died so the family was beginning to fracture to heck and back.  My brother and I did get caught jumping off the roof of the barn by a neighbor who obligingly ratted us out to my Mom as she had just had the new roof put on it. One of the few times my Mom was cool - laughed and said - that’s one of the more mild things you all have done.

And yes, those were the days. Such a shame at how much has changed.

  5. Hehehe, once some old couple drove up, you had to drive up, no excuse to be lost. I was mowing, my sister was weeding the garden (that was my next chore, help sis in the garden)

Anyway, we both met this old couple in a nice Cadillac, and they (honestly) said they were happy that me and my wife (sis) were doing such a good job of keeping the farm going.

I’m fairly certain that the old man’s wife realized what the actual deal was, but we all played along!

  6. Oh dear, I just had a brilliant thought. Buy up the land I know so well and farm it. I know those 40+ acres like the back of my hand. Problem: money to buy the land. Any BMEWS interested in owning farm land?

This is only slightly facile. The fact is that now all of the farm I used to run around on is part of Sycamore State Park. I need a permit to hike on my old farm.
