  4. Just like that old commercial...man with Russian accent walks into new dealer and yells “I WANT BIG AMERICAN CAR WITH TAILFINS!”

  5. 59 Chevy
    59 Buick Electra 225
    59 Cadillac Coupe deVille
    59 DeSoto
    59 Dodge

    1960 version of same

The Chryslers 300 (?) and Imperials were no slouches either.

    For a sheer behemoth of a car, a 1958 OldsmobileSuper 88

Lest we forget, the 1959 Studebaker Hawk

  6. Gawd. The only yellow cars I’ve seen in my life that looked right in yellow have either a horse or a bull for an emblem.

That said, I really like the styling.

And tailfins are hideous and have rightfully faded into the deep, dark past.  grin

  7. With all due respect to BobF, I need to correct a few things.  First, while the Charger (more than likely with a 383)may have been faster in a straight line, and while the Mustang may have only had a 289, it handled much better than that big boat of a Charger - watch the movie again (I have the DVD).

Second, Pontiac had very little to do with the GTO as it is built by the GM subsidiary, Holden, in Australia, and is called the Monaro here down under.  It was purely a political/economic move on GM’s part, primarily to take advantage of the recently passed Free Trade Agreement between Australia and the US - no tarrifs on goods traded between the 2 countries.  All GM had to do was tell Holden to build 18,000 of them left-hand drive, and GM paid the shipping.  Pontiac merely put their badges on the car.

As for wanting some retro looking cars “the way they used to look,” I say get over it, and buy one of the old ones because it ain’t gonna happen.  With all the federal regulations on car manufacturers to make cars more efficient, all cars are designed in the wind tunnel these days to make them aerodynamically smooth for a low coefficient of drag.  Personally, I think the new Mustang is butt-ugly, trying to be something it isn’t; but that’s just my opinion.

  8. That’s. Just. SEXY.

I’ll wait, though, until they get the SRT-8 version out. 6.1L making 425HP. Smaller than the original Elephant AND making the same power! Sadly, about 70 ft-lb less torque though. The styling is appropriately kick-hiney, though. Mopar has been getting better in that arena ever since the merger with Daimler back in ‘98. You won’t see anything else on the road like the 300C, Magnum R/T or SRT-8, and certainly nothing like this Charger. It’ll flatten a “real” Impala SS, and probably even give a ‘Vette a run for the money.
