  1. Set loose packs of wolves and your environmentally friendly solution to the excessive deer populations will be solved.  Sorry if your small dogs and cats get caught up in the solution.  Nothing better than seeing nature at work.

  2. NJ is hip deep in deer. You can’t drive 5 miles on any highway without seeing the official state critters doing their schtick (NJ animal, bug, bird: bloated dead deer by the side of the interstate, covered in black flies, turkey vultures chowing down). If allowed, I could probably shoot 50 deer a day for a full year and not walk 5 miles from my home. Heck, I could get at least 9 just leaning out the window. I wish we had ONLY 400 per square mile!

  3. Or how about freeing some of thopse poor cruelly penned up cats from various zoos? Heck we might even get a few liberal tree huggers in the mix!

  4. You know we live on the edge of a (small) preserve and in 2004 & 2005 we saw deer (not a huge amount) grazing, drinking in the stream and even a youngn who jumped the fence into our neighbors yard. . .since we have not seen a one. I have wondered if they became diseased or what - never crossed my mind about lyme disease - maybe (since the weather is finally nice and I am unemployed again) I shall wander the three blocks over to the office to inquire as to what happened to the deer. Of course I really need to weed those flower beds before I start another round of job hunting. . .

While I would have to be in the real - hunt to survive mode - to shoot bambi myself, I have many a nice recipe for bambi and thanks to a co-worker of the hubby - we had a freezer full this past year. I have to wonder where these moronic libs think that the ‘delicacies’ they relish come from? Some lab experiment gone good? What a crock - it is bambi, thumper, flower, elsie and nemo all done up in seasoning and sauce.

  5. Drew458 is correct about NJ, my sister lives in Jackson and they call them rats.  dont bother planting anything they will eat, it will be gone in the morning.  the good news, is that this turns the moderate animal lovers ardently pro-hunting.  My sister used to love to see deer and couldnt understand how anyone could shoot them.  Hasnt started hunting yet, but no longer turns her nose up at free venison.
the stupid hunting regulations are a big part of the problem.  they should allow market hunts and more and longer doe seasons.  current regs encourage the taking of bucks, but you could shoot every buck but one in a fairly large area and he will still impregnate every female in the area.  In fact he will have an easier time of it, because he will not have to fight any others to do the job.

  6. But if we unleash the dogs of war (or wolves, coyotes, etc) to control the deer herds, won’t they themselves be little more than carriers for these ticks?  I would think the gunpowder route would be a better answer.

I also like how the article says this:

Separately, police sharpshooters “cull” herds on overnight expeditions several times a year.

Use quotes around cull, as if it’s a dirty word.  In upstate NY, where I have some family, deer are a huge issue. The area holds some of the biggest whitetail in the country (Amherst, NY).  Some gov’t org hired guys to go out at night and shoot the deer - then announced it after the fact.  Protesters can’t see them at night and can’t stop them after the deed is done.
