Check out the number of requests from America to The Irish Republic for extraditions of serious criminals over the past 10-years.
Then see how many were DENIED.
Almost ALL!
I am in two minds on this issue. I think the Ambassador is mistaken in as much is it is not an equitable arrangement. I am not convinced that the standards of proof required for probable cause are directly compatible with that in the UK. The Natwest Three http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/NatWest_Three certainly would argue that the treaty shafted them.
Personally I have no real issue with Mackinnon being prosecuted in the US. If you cant do the time don’t do the crime. However what grips my shit is that the treaty has no problem extraditing relatively simple cases but when you come to the likes of the hook handed son of a goat shagger http://www.jihadwatch.org/2008/02/captain-hook-is-a-comin.html and another terrorist Babar Ahmed http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Babar_Ahmad it seems the treaty doesn’t apply???
What really upsets the bedwetters in the Grauniad http://www.guardian.co.uk/ is that in America fifteen years means fifteen years of hard chokey. In Britain fifteen years means six or seven with all the comforts of home.
So I am still not sure the treaty works as it should though he is right that the US treaty has been confused with the far more draconian Euro arrest warrant. This is a far more serious threat to our liberties and is something that should have been kicked into touch if our “leaders” had any balls.
Lyndon, Thanks. Lots of reading and still not done but did read all of the first link.
I hadn’t a clue about them although I recall being somewhat aware, but only vaguely.
btw ... isn’t that filthy bastard still here in the UK? Speaking of Hamza now. Have not heard anything in awhile.
