Says 1888 for the first tire with inner-tube. I kinda had the impression that it was about then - just before the turn of the 20th century. Good & quick surfin’, OCM!
Beat me to it. Only took a few seconds. I was just going to post results:
1844 - invention of vulcanized rubber by Charles Goodyear
1845/6 - pneumatic tire patented
1887/8 - first pneumatic tire by John Dunlop
1903 - tubeless tire patented
1908 - tires with tread
1911 - first successful tire with an inner tube
1946 - radial tires introduced
American inventor EJ Pennington built a working motorcycle in 1895, more of a moped really, although it had a 2 cylinder engine and could hit 40mph, and had it patented by 1896. Nobody would finance him, so he went to England and sold the design to Harry Lawson. His company eventually became BSA.
Early motor vehicles used solid rubber tires. They road like hell, but they never went flat.
See? It always takes me longer to post stuff because I run down a whole bunch of links. I’m just a knowledge junkie I guess. Like the elephant’s child, I has ‘satiable curiosities.
One really need only look at the picture.
Both wheels have valve-stems in them - the rear wheel has a cutout for it.
Tires are rotted mostly away, but the valve stems remain.
Who needs google when you’ve got EYES??
Sucker for the obvious trained eye eh DD.Nice catch.
DD ... no kidding man. I looked and looked when I saw that photo, first in the paper hard copy and then on line. I kinda thought there were once tires but the stems? I never saw that.
Hey, you aren’t an Army sniper by any chance, are ya?
