Unbelievable

  1. It’s a bigger dream than you might realize Skipper. The military have agreed to allow themselves to be voted out of power if the people want that. (that’s the next election in a few months) In June the people voted in a new constitution that allowed for more freedoms and put term limits in for the leaders. So far this election has not been marred by violence, and all the international observers so far say there was no corruption, ballot box stuffing, or “disenfranchisement”. Pretty amazing.

Many of the people running for positions are doing so as independents; most of the populace is totally fed up with the political parties they have and want little to do with them. Naturally some naysayers feel that this will make them easier to be controlled. Some are expecting a high level of invalid ballots, since most of the population is illiterate. Thankfully, the EU is picking up more than half the tab for this election.

Mauritania is one of the poorer places on earth; of the few people who actually can find work, almost half earn $1 or less a day; $8 is a great daily wage.

Mauritania finally got around to abolishing slavery only 25 years ago. They’ve got a long way to go, but it looks like they’re taking the first steps.

I would think this story would be front page stuff here, but I haven’t seen anything yet.

  2. It doesn’t fit into the donk-MSM liberal agenda, so it’ll never float here…
