  1. You tell him, Allan!  Someone needs to hold Jorge Bush accountable.

  2. As I have said before, the only person who could screw up the momentum the Republicans currently enjoy is..... a politician.

  6. Damn Allan, you and Vilmar must have W. and the collective wetback population quaking in their boots! Why is the wetback guide printed in English, I wonder?

  7. Stan,

That is the translated version for you sorry-ass gringos.

You can find the damned original here:

    Any more questions?

  8. Well after a through study of the wetback guide, I can see why so many of them are crossing the Rio Grande. Here is what your typical female INS agent looks like (the ones on the right).

This is the way they are portrayed in the wetback guide.

I would probably sign a confession written in Russian, if confronted by such a prodigious set of hooters.

  9. I have no wish to seem overly pessimistic, but I must confess my fear that this issue is past resolving.

This issue, whether we like it or not, is a minefield for any politician who is intent on his self-preservation, and I am not aware that any other kind exists.

The door has been left open too long.  More-or-less “legal and assimilated” Hispanics now constitute simply too large a voting bloc to ignore or offend.  Any move made toward sealing our southern border is going to be loudly played up as an ethnic issue and not a legal one.  Human nature being what it is, the sensible voices will be drowned out by the screaming of the emotion-driven mob.  As usual.

Thus, few if any politicians will dare to attempt taking this bull by the horns, no matter who they have to thank for their presence in office.  They will not dare to have their names linked to any attempt to close the door.

Only citizens themselves can attempt to close that door.  But it is already obvious that if they do, they will have to fight their own government as well as organized lice like the ACLU, who always exploit such issues for reasons of their own.

And even without this handicap, such a task would require leadership, organization and discipline, as well as numbers, and try as I might, I cannot feel optimistic about the prospects.

I sincerely hope that I am taking too dark a view of all this, but at the moment, the encouraging signs are few.  Others here have compared our position to that of the Roman Empire, in confronting the barbarian infiltrations--and later, barbarian invasions.  The parallel is all too apt.  I fear that we are in the position of a polyglot empire, following in the footsteps of all prior polyglot empires.

  10. Tannenberg,

You bring up a very good point. George W. Bush is in office because of the Hispanic vote. See:

    http://www.newsmax.com/archives/articles/2004/11/4/203450.shtml

Hispanics are a predominantly Catholic and conservative group. For example, our favorite Brazilian, Vilmar! Thankfully, they are now voting Republican. W. is not about to bite the hand that feeds him.

Vilmar wants to slam shut the immigration gates, now that he has gotten through them. Allan probably has some residual brain damage left over from his wetback car crash.

You can have a lot worse neighbors than Mexico (Cuba for instance). Thank God that Iran in not in this hemisphere. Everyone should just drink another Margarita order a plate of enchiladas and chill. That wetback mowing your yard today, could be the future Republican mayor of San Antonio. It is best to learn to speak Spanish and get to know him a little better. If Vincente Fox gets to be as troublesome as Santa Ana, we can promote Mexico into the Axis of evil and invade them. Lets see, there are 32 Mexican states, that would make 82 stars on the flag, that might be a little crowded. It would give the Republicans another 64 Senators in the US Senate. Food for thought…

Oh and did I mention that they draw great cartoon babes.

  11. Stan, you make good points as well.  Thank you for doing so.  It cheers me up.  wink

Yes, Hispanics do tend to be Catholic and conservative, and both of these identities do have their merits, if only because they serve as crosses to certain kinds of social vampires that we could well do without.

It could be worse, at that.

  12. Stan,

I wil say this once and only once: (and this goes for everyone else, too!)

Don’t ever, EVER make a connection between Brazilians and Hispanics.  EVER!!  Brazilians speak Portuguese.  Hispanics speak Spanish (hence the word---hispanic/hispano/hispana)

    That is all!

    cool mad

Posted by Vilmar    United States   03/27/2005  at  02:45 PM

  13. Vilmar, that brings back a memory of mine. When I was in college I had a very big Brazilian teach my structural steels class and that was the first words out of his mouth. He said never to confuse him with a spaniard even before he gave us his name, and the big old boy was cracking his knuckles while he was doing it. I always thought well of him.

    My advise -
Never call a Portuguese or Basque spanish, very touchy about that.
Never make fun of their immigration status, or compare it to a Rio Grande crossing Mexican, you will probably get more than a tongue lashing.

  14. Sorry about that Portugue. I had no idea that the occupants of the Iberian Peninsula held such animosity towards their brethren. Latin-American would have been a better choice of words.

  15. Heritage is one thing.  Illegality in one’s actions is something altogether different.  I may be of Brazilian and Portuguese descent but if they commit illegal acts, they are toast as far as I am concerned.

Posted by Vilmar    United States   03/27/2005  at  06:42 PM

  16. W may very well be right on this issue. More to follow…
