  1. When I was a kid back in New Jersey (mid-1950’s) we had an old toaster my mother had bought in the late 1930’s. It had two toasting elememts, but each swung open to the side and you slid the bread in. It was open and you had to watch to see when the toast was done because there was no “pop-up” feature.

That (G.E. toaster I believe) lasted a long time. And if an element burned out you could go to the hardware store and buy a length of nichrome wire to replace the toasting element.

I bet some youngsters are saying: Ya, that’s about as tall a tale as replacing the heels and soles on shoes when they wore out.

Sorry, as sure as there were no “remotes” for black & white 12-inch screen TV’s back in the mid-1950’s, it is a fact!

  2. I bought a waffle iron at a yard sale 34 years ago - 5 bucks - the kids bought me a new one a couple of years ago - said mine was pathetic and old and I deserved better. The light crap on the top (power and ready) have already broken.

I have a flat griddle out in the garage (Mom stuff) just waiting to get into the box (I remember seeing it) with the cords - to see if it works. Have two of her old pots in the cabinets - they are in better shape than the ones I gave my youngest daughter.

Gee, I forgot about that. But yeah. We did do that long ago.
Before moving here in ‘04, I bought a pair of shoes in Ca., cost $80. I guess the soles weren’t meant to be replaced, they were quite comfortable, but by ‘06 or possibly before, they were worn out. So I took em to a shoe repair place here only to be told that the shoe wasn’t made to have the sole replaced. There wasn’t anything to work with. They couldn’t glue on a new sole over the old, because the the sole wasn’t solid enough. Don’t know if I’m explaining that correctly.  The sole was almost a spongy kind. Not exactly but not a hard leather or rubber either. So they tried to glue a new one on anyway to see what might happen.  What happened was it came off.
