  1. This book is filled with problems!  There are two different moves that are certain wins though both will take some time. There may be more but I saw two right away. I will give one of them now.
1… RxP!  If 2.QxR RxQ 3.RXR then Qe1+ leads to mate.
1… RxP!  If 2.RXR RxR 3.QXQ then Rc1+ leads to mate.
1… RxP!  If 2.RxR RxR 3.Q(anywhere) Qxa2 and white’s f pawn falls and the black connected passed pawns cannot be stopped!

If this is not the book move the other works as well! So that is still left to guess.

Hey! It’s not the Bible. And I enjoy busting a line some Senior Master says is a win!

Doesn’t lead to mate, it IS mate.

  4. Yeah I knew about what you said in comment 3, just no way fix it after I hit enter.  And it does lead to mate on that exact move!

I said I was going to download a program called Pawn.  No luck with it it froze my system so often I could not see if it worked or not.  I did download another program called Arena.  This one is taking a bit of learning but will do analysis and theoretically has a rating of over 2600.  Back to that in a minute.

I saw the book move first s minute later decided the move I would make in this problem is:
1… B-g5!!  I won’t go through all the variations but it seemed to me better.  Now I am sure it is.

I was able to enter the original setup into Arena and I tried both first moves for black.  Gave the comp as much time as it wanted to analyze the position.  Twenty minutes of thinking and it went 22 to 24 plys deep. Might have been moves not plys I am not sure.  Anyway Rxc2 gave a result of +4.69 B-g5 was two points higher.  I took black and let the comp play white and in the line B-g5 with the comps help got to a mating position on move 21.  The Comp saw mate in 11 and given more time saw mate in 8.  It took till move 28 for me to reach a similar position with Rxc2.

Chris I responded to the email you sent me.  Did you get it?  It didn’t bounce back but might have ended up in your spam folder.  If you did not receive it let me know and I will resend from a different email account.  I am receiving the comment updates.

  6. Almost forgot to comment on 1.… Bg5

Yes it’s adequate. But 1.… Rxc2 is threatening not only the White Q, but almost immediate mate. It’s a far more forceful move. 1.… Bg5 does win the exchange, and that’s all it does.
