  1. You sure you don’t live in Central Texas? You just described our ‘soil’ and weather to a T.

    We use a 6’ tall iron breaker bar (sharp point on one end, chisel point on the other) to break up the limestone and roots in order to ‘dig’ a hole. Remove the debris, fill it with topsoil and compost, and plant something - only to watch the wildlife eat it.

    About the only things the critters won’t touch are sage, rosemary and mint. That’s okay if you’re doing a herb garden, but not so great for landscaping. They even eat the blossoms off prickly pear cactus.

  2. Actually I was thinking about getting hold of a breaker. They make shorter ones that you can slam with a sledge. And since I really only need a series of holes 4” wide, such a thing could do me right.
