First thought that comes to my mind is Hanoi Janes’ vagina.
But Maj, that’s the first thought you have all the time!!
Geez, I remember the last time somebody let the Skipper drive a plane. Didn’t he come out near Roswell or something? I seem to recall lots of stealth bombers near the runway.
I think this time the Skipper is at the controls of Air Force One. If he opened the window he’s hear the local band warming up to play “Hail to the Chief”.
Actually, its wide, open and well-traveled.
My mistake. I blame it on lack of range time.
Really need to go to the range.
It kind of looks like Wright - Patterson.
Nope, definitely not Wright-Patterson.
It’s literally right next door to me.
After a bit of searching - it’s Andrews AFB, Maryland.
That was a good one, Skipper.
Drew guessed it and Sky Captain confirmed. Andrews AFB is the only USAF base that (1) the runways runs due North-South (see compass upper right), (b) sits to the right of a major river (the Potomac) and (c) is smack dab in the middle of a highly populated area (Prince Georges County, Maryland).
Just to the left is a small subdivision called Capitol Heights with row upon row of cheap three-story government housing projects where I lived (along with most of the military brats in the area) from 1958-1960.
I tried to make this one easy. The next ones will be a little harder. Stay tuned ...
it would help if you included the base golf course(s) in the frame or included the name of one of the areas titty bars.
I got there in about 61 or 62 which preceded the golf courses. They had just completed the first nine holes when I left. I had an easy job, an AF auditor, then as a financial guy working with the AF Systems Command. The latter job was a real pleaser and I got to participate in the development of one of the first remote entry accounting systems - land line to the computer, not to exceed one mile away. After it was up and running there we took the system on a road show and plugged them in at the AF Systems Command bases (9?) across the U.S. The system used converted IBM typewriters, typing the accounting entry in the finance offices on a stiff paper document while the transactions were stored on the distant computer. That system was remade in a few years by the AF and became the one and only computerized accounting system for the AF around the world.
Skip,
FWIW—as I’m sure you know, there are other USAF bases in or very close to large metropolitan areas but none of the ones I’m thinking of also have 36L/R runways and are near a river.
In your picture, the BX is the bright white roofed building in the upper left, the commissary is directly south of that, and the furniture/outdoor/toy BX annex is the building south of that. The I-495 beltway is the road cutting diagonally across the center/upper left corner toward the middle of the picture.
Keep ‘em coming. This ought to be fun.
Hehehe. I’m enjoying this too. So far, I’ve used USAF bases that I’ve been based at or flown into so the runways are recognizable to me at least. Andrews is perhaps the most easily recognizable.
There will be more of these “Lost Over An Air Base” pics if youse guys are having fun!
i agree. this is a nice little diversion that is not only fun but conjures up old memories of TDY’s long forgotten.
