Looks a lot like Kelly AFB in San Antonio. But you appear to be a tad to high on the approach, unless you like dive bomb approaches.
Bingo right?
What the other gents said—Kelly City-Base and Lackland AFB. The base on the other side of town is Randolph AFB, and the barracks in question are the BMTS dorms.
YOU GOT IT IN ONE! That is Kelly AFB and Lackland off to the left. Dang! I miss those days!
I can see now I’m gonna have to get you folks some tougher ones.
Tomorrow’s will be a DOOZY! OOH-RAH!
Dive bomb approach? HELL YES!
Egg on a plate type landing
I got it before I read the responses but I guess that doesn’t count. It was there that I crept into the AF in 1955. Your clue about the river through the center of the city rang my bell.
For the record, I’ve talked to one of the pilots who flies supplies into Baghdad. This is how they approach the runway at Baghdad International Airport. Come in high, wait until the last second then dive for the tarmac. It avoids the RPG’s and other assorted crap flying around in the air, according to my friend.
Many a contractor have lost their lunch on the approach, it seems.
ah the memories.
security hill is standing off by itself in the left center of the picture. cut my teeth there on sperry univac and ibm mainframes. the place looked like a prison or an insane asylum from the road. sometimes it felt that way from the inside.
Ronald Regan’s contra problem started there as well when a mysteriuos white c130 with no tail number crashed during take-off and spilled all kinds of military supplies all over the airfield. House Democrat Henry B. Gonzalez (a real pain in the ass) started snooping around and the rest is history.
quirkly little course but some really challenging holes. heard its overgrown now.
Morning Skipper,
I even got Kelly-Lackland. But, those of us who went through training there will never forget it.
For a C-130 driver that approach is a piece of cake. Hell you can wait until the end of the runway disappears under the nose kick her into a sideslip and still make it.
