  1. I was standing on the beach in Melbourne Beach, FL a few years back and watched a shuttle launch from 30 miles away. It was spectacular. A Roman candle to Heaven. I’ve seen a few launches all the way down to Miami on clear mornings. The contrails are easily seen 180 miles away, though no fire. It always makes me grin.

  2. My hat is off to all those folks who strap themselves to that giant rocket in order to fly through, play in, and explore the void “out there”.  It takes some real bravery to do what they do.

Not to disrespect those souls who have sacrificed their lives by going up in the Space Shuttle fleet, but when are we going to retire this seriously old line of orbiters and fly something that represents the top of the line in safety and technology?

  3. You definatly have to have some relly big ones to want to sit on top of something that has more explosive power then alot of small nuclear weapons. The fact that we have only had 3 accidents in over 40 years as far as manned flight is concerned still is far better then riding in your own car or on the airlines anyday.

  5. I still have a print out of the FreeRepublic live thread that was following the Columbia. It is a sobering read as Freepers across the country report the sighting of Columbia and then the dreaded words, telemetry lost…
