  1. There goes 200 tons (w/ some payload) down the runway, some folks get irked at the noise generated by these aircraft, however, everytime I hear them I tell the kids, son...thats the sound of freedom! tune

  2. Yep, when I lived at Ellsworth AFB (early 60’s think Cuban missle crisis) when the B-52s and KC-135s took off enmass, the ground shook for miles.  Even had a couple teachers who made snide comments about the noise.  You had a school system that was more than 95% military brats.

Amazing thing is that they intend to run these birds untill 2040.  Nearly 100 years of use out of that aircraft.

  3. At my childhood home in Kentucky, Fort Knox’s bombs on a clear day rattle the sliding glass doors. In our previous location of VA Beach (NAS Oceana base housing) we’d have flyovers of F-14s, FA/18s, C-130s, C-5s, C-17s, and those loud ass Navy helicopters (Don’t know the names, just know they’d buzz the treetops) Our current home of Maine is WAAY too quiet. Nothing but P-3s and the occasional C-5 (can’t miss the whine from THOSE engines)

  4. At Minot AFB during the 70’s, I used to listen to these birds take off round the clock. As a SAC base we were on constant alert and the B-52’s were a fact of life—as were the missile silos all around the coutryside. I used to go to sleep in the barracks at night listening to the whine of the jets on these birds winding up for takeoff. Peace was our profession. Still is. God bless those who watch over us. Thank you all.

  5. It is a good thing that we no longer need to have, as the song said, bomber jet planes flying shotgun in the sky, however I am glad that they have not turned into butterflies above our nation, either.

Up at NAS Whidbey, the jets roar off all the time, and when the USS Lincoln is port at Everett the jets are not there but she sure is a beauty to look at!

Sev, where abouts in Maine? Getting flooded? I was just in Portland two weeks ago - beeeeautiful!  cool smile

  6. Rickvid - NAS Brunswick area. Haven’t had that much flooding here.
It’s pretty here scenery-wise, but the amount of Kerry/Edwards stickers I see is sickening…

  8. Over at The 2blowhards there’s a recent post about aircraft design. Came down to, the optimum design for a fuselage and wing passenger/freight aircraft was established very soon after the Wright Brothers made their first flight. And bombers are basically freight carrying aircraft.

The B52 is a good design, and well built. Even after all these years they stand up to the work they’re called on to do. One day they will be replaced, but until then they’ll keep pluggin’ along.

  10. I’ve seen the B2 a few times at the Thunder over Louisville airshows. Best time HAD to be the time we watched the airshow from my aunt and uncles houseboat parked on the Ohio River, just past the Second Street Bridge. Damn thing flew RIGHT over us. Absolutely amazing aircraft - I’ve heard louder LAWNMOWERS than this...thing...flying overhead…
