  1. What is it with the tight-fisted, pucker-arsed British Military? They treat their troops like shit, they won’t fix the exploding fuel tanks on their aircraft, they won’t equip their soldiers with the proper amount of decent gear, even the little military car they issue is a bloomin deathtrap. And this? This woman was a hero. She put her life at risk to save another, and did it in an era when women were considered little more than shrinking violets. And all she got for it was a “mention in despatches”? Cheap bastards.

It is a miracle that they get an re-enlistments at all.

  2. Drew, you’ve nailed it.  They’re stingy, and this was just part of that trend.

But peiper, I totally disagree with you that “women do own the copyright for being screwed without being kissed.” Just ask any man who’s been through the grist-mill that is a divorce court in his region.  Or look at the welfare moms who just keep having kids and using them to stay on the system, not having to work in a job that trades actual value for wages.

Now this specific lady (Audrey Roche):  Yes, she deserved a medal.

  3. Yep, she got the short end of the stick, except, she always knew that she saved a life and that means a lot. Recognition for her bravery was deserved, but, I have a feeling that she’d do it all over again even if she knew the outcome. Sounds like a very class act. I would have liked to know her and am feeling very proud of my gender right now.

  4. Remember Back in the Days of the Old West, when Men were Men and Women were too.
This Strong Woman Deserves every Honor that would have been given a Man.

  5. Tiger,
You’re right and I had lost sight of that completely.

I guess I was angered reading the obit to find what the lady did, and how petty and unappreciative the military of her day reacted.

Punkins put it well saying she’d always know she had saved a life, and would have done it again.

Damn shame some of the better values of that generation are dying with them.

Least they are here, it seems.

  6. Peiper:  No worries, we all get a little “laser focused” occasionally.  grin (And that’s an understatement where I’m concerned, so I’m right there with you.)

And about the values dying, here’s what I can suggest:  Be those values, and be the light in the dark for your neighbors to notice, and hopefully be inspired by.
