There is nothing wrong with this. Federal funds/matching funds pay for roads all the time. In Texas, they sometimes put up a sign at the construction site giving the dollar amount. Why not spend some money in Bentonville, Arkansas? Maybe they will get indoor plumbing there next.
I would not be surprised if BobF is right about a quid pro quo. Would it be the first?

Yes but this doesnt look like federal matching.. it looks like federal footing the whole bill… it still doesnt compare to the $722 million going to Alaska transportation improvements though..even though by size i guess the $722 million could be considered a bargain in Alaska… that’s the only other major 1 i could find in this 284 billion bill..
although these do stick out..
“ The bill also includes $2 million to construct a garage on the campus of Lipscomb University, a private Christian liberal arts university in Nashville. Kim Chaudoin, a school spokeswoman, said the garage will be located near an academic building for which ground was broken last week.
An additional $4 million will finance a graffiti-elimination program in Queens and Brooklyn”
hmm cant they just arm some homeless people in new york with some paint to cover over the graffiti in exhange for food or something? and I wonder how long before the athiests will start protesting Govt. money going to a christian University?
Wal-Mart has more cash flow than SWEDEN for God’s sake… let them finance their OWN road!
Correction: Wal-Mart has more cash flow than EUROPE.
Sam Walton built a very large airport out of his own pocket in 70s for his private fleet of full-sized jets. It is the terminus for all the traffic that comes and goes on behalf of WalMart. All of the major manufacturers have large offices close to the WalMart Headquarters to facilitate business. I’d say this is Bentonville paying back some of what Sam Walton brought and gave to that speck on the AR map.
Speck on the AR map, indeed....
Bentonville, Arkansas, 2030, population 18 million.
I don’t have a problem with this. I know the article said full funding, but that isn’t how this works. The city has in-house engineers in planning that have put that number together but that number is very preliminary. They got lucky to get what they asked for, I’m guessing that is do to Walmart’s influence. But I doubt they will get any more from the Feds and once the design engineers get done that cost is going to go way up. A two lane expanded to a five lane, through town, with a highway interchange, shit, Ca Ching $$$$$$. There will be eminent domain issues; and local, state and Fed agencies will all have imput on the design. Also the funding isn’t guaranteed yet, it has to go through the senate yet and get signed by the Pres. Until the funding is set the city will not even put out a request for design teams. It will be four to five years before this gets built, and by that time that $32mil will only cover half if the city is lucky.
