  6. Ahhh, those amusing little scamps over at the Religion of Peace!!!  They’re sooooo misunderstood!!

Can we all recognise that this is a disfunctional religion of insanity?  These savages want to impose their 8th century brand of culture upon the rest of the world.  Enough!!!

Tolerance is not a suicide pact!!!  We have every right to defend our culture against the barbarians from the East (and their little jihad buddies in our midst).  When will the backlash begin?  Is the West to corrupt that we won’t even defend ourselves!?!

  11. It wasn’t the cartoons that justify the killing of a man (or any number of men, women, and children) it is their religion.  Not only does it ‘justify’ it compels them to do so.  That is why you will NEVER see ‘mainstream’ Islam condem any of this.

  12. because they are shit, how do i explane this, living in london i got loads of mates from all over, where is LBJ? to explane, n that fucking badger jumping up n down, beccayinn you are right, shit this danish beer is strong surprised

  13. I remember clearly reading, probably in the Koran, that Moslems should not blaspheme a non-believer’s religion, lest they respond in kind.  This whole deal is Bad News; it stirs up the crazies and does not help the moderate Moslems’ position, does it?

What’s the benefit in insulting someone’s religion?  It’s stupid and rude. Winston Churchill wrote a very polite letter to the Japanese, declaring war on them.  He commented that you may have to kill a man, but you don’t have to insult him.

Mencken said that we respect another man’s religion the same way we respect his opinion that his wife is beautiful and his kids are smart.

It doesn’t excuse arson and murder, and it may feel like we’re getting payback, but this is rude, stupid, and pointless.

Posted by Oink    United States   02/07/2006  at  01:46 PM

  14. I can’t explain the dancing badger.  I just couldn’t find a better avetar.  Nothing seemed to fit…

I don’t think I am insulting their religion.  It is hard to get away from the ‘kill the infidel’ platform.

I don’t understand how we can say it is the ‘fundamentalist’ Muslims that are causing all the problems and the true Muslims are a kind peace loving folk.  To me, fundamentalist means simply to believe exactly what the Holy Book says.  So, if the “fundamentalists” are driving this bus, then I would have to agree that they are the ‘true’ Muslims and the moderate, mainstreemers are the sell outs.

Posted by Beccayinn    United States   02/07/2006  at  02:47 PM

  15. Becca-Badger: To a Liberal, ‘Fundamentalist’ is a dirty word, just like ‘Right-Wing’.  Remember the “right-wing Communists”? What the hell were they?  Bad Communists! As compared to the normal Good Communists.

All fanatics are people who, after having lost track of their goal, re-double their efforts. The end justifies any means.

Posted by Oink    United States   02/07/2006  at  02:59 PM

  16. I just don’t know that they have lost track of their goal.  The goal has always been to exterminate anyone that does not worship the way they do.  I think the MSM would have us believe that there is this giant chasm between the terroists and every other ‘good’ Muslim.  I am afraid that the chasm isn’t as giant as one would wish.  No, there are only a minority actually committing the atrocities, but there are many more that support by the fact that they don’t condemn such actions.

Do I believe that there are those Muslims that don’t wish me dead? Certainly.  But, then there are many that ascribe a certain faith to their lives without actually following any of the tenents of said faith.

I have NO problem letting anyone worship in whatever way they deem fit...as long as I am afforded the same courtesy.  I would be happy to have any mosque in my neighborhood (right along side the churches, synagogues, meeting houses and covens) that doesn’t preach my destruction.  But, I am tired of supporting this myth that on the whole, Islam preaches peace and good will toward others.

Again, if there are those that call themselves ‘Muslims’ that want to let me live (preserving my femininity, dressed in blue jeans, supporting Israel and basic human rights) then I am happy to call them my friend.

Posted by Beccayinn    United States   02/07/2006  at  05:09 PM

  17. Oink, I mean no offense, but if there is an injunction in the Koran urging the Muslim not to blaspheme the religion of non-believers--when he is urged to butcher those same non-believers as infidels!--I would like to know precisely where that may be found.

I find the idea exceedingly difficult to credit, in view of the way the “faithful” painted the earth red, all the way from Java to Tours, during their devil’s holiday of conquest in medieval times.

Not to mention their various and sundry revivals since.

    hmmm

Posted by Tannenberg    United States   02/07/2006  at  05:21 PM

  18. A word of encouragement. Europe was once very similar to today’s Moslem world. We call that time The Dark Ages.  We got over it.  True, we didn’t have Anthrax, Sarin, and Nukes.

Posted by Oink    United States   02/07/2006  at  05:29 PM

  19. A Renaissance can work wonders for any who dare to try it.

The Moosies, however, did not.  In a fit of petulance over the Crusades and associated setbacks, they slammed the door forever on the West, beginning with the burning of the great library of Cordoba, far and away the greatest of its day.

    blank stare

Posted by Tannenberg    United States   02/07/2006  at  05:41 PM

  20. So did Japan.  Hmmmm.  Different situation, but when they did modernize they did it in a big way, and the West had cause to regret it.  They kept the old ways, but added modern weapons.  There’s an encouraging thought re: Islam!

The Crusades helped trigger the Renaissance ... and The Black Death.

Posted by Oink    United States   02/07/2006  at  06:58 PM

  21. Tann/Oink/Becca: in regards to Muslims and extremism, it is my understanding that they are reading the same Koran (or however you spell it), but differ on critical points of interpretation.  Same thing happens in Christianity...and it even gets its goofballs and their wacky interpretations.  Ever heard the expression, “I’m gonna’ get Old Testament on your ass?”

Oink: the scary parallel with Japan is that WE (the U.S.) essentially forced Japan out of its isolationism and started them on their way to modernization (with a little help from France and Germany).  Some have said that we have done something similar in the Middle East in the past few decades.  shut eye

Posted by shinjinrui    United States   02/07/2006  at  08:16 PM

  22. Yes, Shin, we’ve quoted some bloodthirsty “Saith The Lord” from the OT.  The interpretation is that these passages were from early in the Hebrews’ evolving understanding of God’s nature.  Maybe. I’m even less familiar with the Koran, but I understand that every word is supposed to be straight from Allah, via Mohammed.  That leaves very little wiggle room.  Critics say that the more merciful and non-violent passages were from when Islam was weaker and could not afford to fight. Maybe.

Posted by Oink    United States   02/07/2006  at  08:31 PM

  23. Oink, Shin, I can understand the parallel you draw between Japan and the Middle East, in terms of modernization.

If someone of the stature of the Meiji Emperor appeared in the Middle East, then perhaps the forces of cultural inertia, fragmented and mutually hostile populations, and reactionary religious establishments could be overcome.

But can that happen?  Kemal Ataturk took Turkey along that road in the 1920’s-1930’s, and perhaps he succeeded as well as anyone could, but even today, many remain unreconciled to a non-theocratic Turkish government.  And we all know what happened when the Shah tried his hand....

    hmmm

  24. Okay, enough!  Now I am depressed!  Who is buying me a beer?  blank stare

Posted by Beccayinn    United States   02/07/2006  at  10:32 PM

  25. Becca: The Skipper has some beer.  But I have, for you, such a deal .. cheese

She was young, she was pure, she was new, she was nice
She was fair, she was sweet seventeen
He was old, he was vile, and no stranger to vice
He was base, he was bad, he was mean pig
He had slyly inveigled her up to his flat
To view his collection of stamps
And he said as he hastened to put out the cat
The wine, his cigar and the lamps

    Have some madeira, m’dear
You really have nothing to fear
I’m not trying to tempt you, that wouldn’t be right
You shouldn’t drink spirits at this time of night
    Have some madeira, m’dear
It’s really much nicer than beer smile
I don’t care for sherry, one cannot drink stout
And port is a wine I can well do without
It’s simply a case of chacun a son gout
    Have some madeira, m’dear

    **********************************
Forget about the “seventeen”—I’m sure you’re legal pig
Chacun a son gout = “each to his own taste” pig

Posted by Oink    United States   02/07/2006  at  11:23 PM

  26. Now that is quite an offer!

Posted by Beccayinn    United States   02/07/2006  at  11:44 PM

  27. You think so? Heh Heh pig Now the final verses:

Then there flashed through her mind what her mother had said
    With her antepenultimate breath
“Oh my child, should you look on the wine that is red
Be prepared for a fate worse than death”
She let go her glass with a shrill little cry
Crash! tinkle! it fell to the floor
When he asked, “What in Heaven?” she made no reply
Up her mind, and a dash for the door

Have some madeira, m’dear, rang out down the hall loud and clear
A tremulous cry that was filled with despair
As she fought to take breath in the cool midnight air
Have some madeira, m’dear, the words seemed to ring in her ear
Until the next morning, she woke up in bed
With a smile on her lips and an ache in her head
And a beard in her ear ‘ole that tickled and said
    Have some madeira, m’dear

  29. And here I was thinking she got away!  I think it is the ‘smile on the lips and the ache in the head’ that keeps me drinking beer....but you almost had my convinced, Monsieur!

  30. pig Oui Oui Becca-Badger, but beware The Skipper’s beer. A couple of points:

    1. It’s a song; the man’s voice was that of a lecherous old goat in the version I heard.
    2. I am confident a man wrote it.

Posted by Oink    United States   02/08/2006  at  09:59 AM

  31. She lowered her standards by raising her glass
Her courage, her eyes and his hopes
    tongue wink

  32. Thank You, Ms. Badger, for pointing out to the class an excellent example of the use of a literary ‘conceit’ in this sobering (snort) Cautionary Tale for Gullible Young Virgins.  Do we have any with us in the class today?  cheese  pig

  33. All I know, Mister pig , is you had better watch yourself!  When Skipper finds out you are singing pretty ditties to the lovely young ladies aboard ship AND warning them of the dangers of imbibing in his captivating concoctions, you might find yourself in a spot of trouble.  I would hate to see you shot. And peace settled over the good ship USS BMEWS as the pig collapsed in a heap at the Captain’s feet, squeeling freakishly as the evil lifeforce drained from its unsightly carcass.
