  1. Sorry to hear about the hassles at LAX. I won’t try to defend the ‘just following orders’ drones there, but I will make a couple of comments.

LAX is the bastard stepchild of California and the federal government. It combines the worst of both. I grieve when I think about the impression LAX and immigration make on people visiting the US. It makes the entire country look bad.

I live in a small town where the people are friendly and helpful - and that includes the local government officials and staff. Even the state and federal employees here come from this area, and hence are not as hopelessly and maddeningly indifferent as their brethren and sistren in large cities.

And I fully understand about the rope maze thing. Sometimes it’s the little things that drive you crazy - like a pebble in your shoe. It doesn’t cause any real damage, but it’s just so damn aggravating…

  2. Well said CT. And worse yet, you mustn’t question them or be critical in any way.
The fact we’ve been married all these yrs (42) and she even worked long enuff and paid taxes long enuff to have Soc.Sec., that meant nothing. They accused her of having a green card (which doesn’t expire for til 2014 and now must be turned in) and thus denying a deserving immigrant of a place and card. They might have a valid point with regard to her status as a permanent resident of the UK instead of the USA, but things just not as cut and dried as they want to make thing. I’m still a US citizen born and raised. And it isn’t like we married to sneak her in 42 yrs ago. She was already here and working.

  3. whoops ... by here and working of course I mean the USA.  I wrote that as tho I was still home in CA. Which btw kinda seemed a bit less like that on this trip.

  5. Hard to tell without actually seeing a pic of your wife.

In 1979 I was working in a liquor store. I carded an Asian guy in front of my boss. He was nice and produced ID that identified him as Professor __ at WSU. I thanked him and proceeded to fill his order.

My boss was laughing, sort of. He told me ‘if you hadn’t carded him I’d have fired you.’ He then proceeded to tell me that Prof __ was a friend of his and comes in to test us on carding. My boss prefers that to police ‘testing’.

The point is that sometimes age isn’t apparent. Example, an old girlfriend of mine, who almost became my wife, invited me to dinner with her parents. If she hadn’t told me, I’d have thought her mother was her sister (who I hadn’t met yet.)

In fact, I was carded until I hit 35. Then the grey started showing in my beard.

  6. Well, she sure doesn’t look 21 or under 21 and that is certain.

And the carding of a 92 year old boggles the imagination. 92?
