Look at the numbers. A broke Canadian family earning $50,000 a year spends 48% or $24,000 in taxes a year. Then Onterio spends 40% of taxes, or $9,600 a year, on health care. Then when your daughter needs knee surgery you have to wait 3 years, sic.
In contrast, a 30 year old couple and two children can get HSA insurance in Lansing, MI., for $150 a month or $1,800 a year. In Canada Doctors make so much less that we could drop the cost in half ($75 a month or $900 a year) and still let them use American docs if they wanted.
Sally C. Pipes said, “They need to break the system down or open the system up to competition.” She supports President Bush’s Medical Savings Accounts (MSA) which has been renamed Health Savings Accounts (HSA).
The Onterio Hospital Association says they are so strapped that they are going to lay off 10,000 more nurses and hospital workers. I suppose these laid off medical workers will be hired by GM to make cars in Onterio for the US market. If they are smart they should move to Florida and get a big bonus because we need nurses bad.
The World Health Organization in 2000 ranked France’s health care system best, what a joke. Arafat probably read about that. When I was in France the hospitals I saw were about 3000 square feet. In America, hospitals are more like 300,000 square feet and they are full of equipment.
I have a doctor insured that was diagnosed in December with bone cancer. Next month he will have a bone marrow transplant in Denver. If he was seeing Fur Trapping Canadian Doctors he wouldn’t even have been diagnosed yet. We will pay up to $8 million anywhere in the world for treatment. Trust me, no one is suggesting that he leave the USA. The King of Jordan on the other hand, jumped into his 747 and bee lined it to MN to die.
Canadians can’t buy treatment in their own country. Hillary also wanted to outlaw Americans from purchasing treatment in America if the Government said no. Parents would have had to go to Mexico for surgery on their daughter if their bean counting Managed Care government official didn’t authorize treatment. I suppose there would be hospital ships 3 miles off shore in international waters making money hand over fist if Hillary had been successful. Instead we had the Republican Revolution in 1994.
If you are really sick or hurt and need the best medical treatment in the world, come to the USA. If you are a Fur Trapping Canadian you will probably get an infection if you could ever get your surgery so you shouldn’t complain about the lines. Think about how your rationing is slowing down all of the infections with the Canadians’ poor health care system.
Canada - send us your doctors and nurses.
In a world of capitalism you should have your choice OCM. If you want routine/preventative services; just pay extra and have them included in covered services, geeesh.
Everything struggles hard to exist in a world of Capitalism and competition, including your NOT FOR PROFIT hospitals.
Does NOT FOR PROFIT mean they are untaxed? I say tax the fuck out of the hospitals and let the people go tax free.
NOT FOR PROFIT hospitals paying CEOs and administrators millions per year and of course, they get all government contracts in the name of poor people and children.
Hey OCM - David Yepsen, in the Des Moines Register today, is reporting on a smart move by a Liberal Democrat running for President in ‘08. Iowa Governor Vilsack, the Democrat, is backing President Bush’s HSA Agenda and want’s to install them as an option for the poor on Medicaid. Vilsack has bolted from the Democrat Socialist playbook and is making sense. A Democrat Governor preaching Republican health care reform is a MODERATE.
You heard it here first..Moderate Liberal Vilsack in ‘08, for the loser Democrats.
Are you two at it again?
Get off!
I am thankful every second that I am in America. For all the fussing that we do (some of which is more than justified), we have it good, and have always had it good, in comparison to the rest of the world. Everywhere you look around us, you see people screwed by nature, screwed by their governments, or screwed by themselves. No, America is not perfect, not by a long shot, but it is as close to perfection as has been achieved in history. The poor here, baring the VERY poor, live better than most “middle class” in other countries. Even the homeless have more opportunity than the poor in Africa. If anyone wants to move out of America because it is so bad, I say let them, and good riddance.
Dac, my sentiments exactly.
If they move out of America and then need surgery they should come back; ONLY if they have the money or health insurance that pays world wide.
Good American medicine ain’t cheap.
You’ve hit the nail on the head Vilmar. Here’s a little tidbit about our health care system that happens all too often and on a regular basis:
There are acute bed shortages in almost all hospitals. If you have to be transported by ambulance to the ER, you’ll probably spend hours laying on the stretcher in the hall way - which brings up another problem. The ambulance crew has only one main stretcher per unit. So they are held up for an equal number of hours waiting for their stretcher to be freed up and that’s one less ambulance on the road. On a busy night, there may actually be NO AMBULANCES OR EMT’s available at all for hours.
The problem is exacerbated by the fact that many people don’t have a “family physician”, have Blue Cross or some other plan that will pay for an ambulance. The elderly are a prime example. So they get a cold or the flu, they call an ambulance to take them to the hospital because they can’t/won’t go to a walk-in clinic or call their doctor (if they are lucky enough to have one).
The other problem is that the hospitals are overcrowded with chronic care patients who should be in a nursing home or other long term care facility, but aren’t because there’s a huge waiting list, or they can’t afford it, or are just too damn stubborn to go. So they languish in a hospital, taking up valuable beds and resources, and ultimately die - but months later.
(Z Wolf: it’s spelled Ontario, not Onterio.)
Vilmar: You left out this part too - We have Provincial Sales Tax (PST) & Goods and Services Tax (GST - Federal). PST of 7% (or more) on most things; GST of 7% on ALL purchses.
Any assholes out there STILL want to move to Canada, eh???
-Dan D,
Canuckistan
Addendum: The wealthy in Canada needing an MRI, CAT scan or life-saving cancer treatment, or other major surgery don’t go to our hospitals. Guess where they go?
Code Blue: Canadian’s Medicare Sucks.
Well said Dan D.
