I feel sorry for the horse that posed for that statue.
In the Velvet Revolution in November 1989, the crowds swirled around the heroic equestrian statue of King Wenceslas on the great square that carries his name. Now a pastiche plastic version of that statue is on display near the square in the Lucerna complex built by Havel’s father. It was unveiled for the 10th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution. The king is still sitting regally but his seat is now the belly of his dead horse, suspended by its legs from the ceiling, its tail and mane hanging straight down. It is the image of a country no longer sure of its way.
