  1. Glad to see this for the people who have *been there/are there* trying to get back to normal, tho’ I think their *normal* is going to be far different than what it was prior to Katrina. I spoke with a couple recently who has a family member that lives there- these people stay in very close contact with her, and several friends that live there...They have relayed that the general consensus among anyone there with half a brain is that Nagin and his behavior immediately prior to/during, and especially after, have hurt the effort tremendously to get things done, ie: a lot of volunteer work, etc...i can see where that might be true. Personally, I think Nagin should have been relieved after his stupid *chocolate city* comments, but that certainly would have caused a firestorm of criticism. Also, I caught a piece this a.m. about Slidell La, having just re-opened their first punblic eating place- a cafeteria type restaurant...the Mayor there is a hard charging, but calm retired military officer- it was very nice to see how involved, hands on, and supportive he was.
Perhaps the quote in this story from Stephanie Hull is indicative of the problem in N.O..."New Orleans has always done what it wants to do, and it’s gonna come back whether the country wants it to or not”.

  2. Never been to NOLA for Mardi Gras, but have been there three different years, in the late Summer (usually mid-August). Last time was about 20 years ago. Too many Hurricane Punches and many Jambalayas, crawfish pies and file’ gumbos were enjoyed. And in late summer, the weather is usually about 95 degrees and 95 percent humidity… A fun place to have visited and experienced, but even back then, I never considered it as a place to live.
Definitely NOLA should be up at the top of the “Party Towns” list.  beerparty  party  beerstoyou

  5. (I know I will catch flak for this from the traditionalists, but...)

Hello, people of New Orleans!  What’s that?  Your town was trashed by a couple of hurricanes?  How to respond...throw a party and trash it some more?!?

I wonder how many federal aid dollars are going towards this little party...but, hey!  Laissez les bon temps rouler, right?
