  1. Yep, All or most of us here feel like members of an orchestra playing to an audience of 10.
I see you also saw Annies retort too.Smart and funny, who knew?
So, if we always lose the argument whats the point of bringing up the idea in the first place?
Oh Ya. we’re all rotten fucking inbred racists looking for a fight , Almost forgot,Sorry!

  2. And it won’t surprise you to learn that this story is in today’s paper with all the quotes described that made Drew see red. Nowhere was it published that what appeared had more to it.

Drew, I must say and much to my chagrin, that I long thought anyone born in US was automatically a US citizen.  That’s because that is what was taught and that is what was accepted.  I don’t think it ever occurred to anyone to read it because nobody was aware.

The line “and not subject to any foreign power” is not something the average person could be expected to have read, simply because there wasn’t any reason to look for it. It all seemed so logical. You’re born in the USA, you’re a citizen of the USA. Nobody looked any further cos nobody ever thought there was anything to find. Add to that, in years gone by the issue wasn’t even, well, an issue.  I don’t think many gave it any thought. It’s only now with all the electronic info available that ppl like Drew make ppl like me more aware.
In my heyday, and before puters especially, I doubt many outside academia knew about or ever read what Drew blogged here.

  3. Peiper is right; people don’t know because they aren’t told. So the fault lies squarely with the educators.

I guess I was one of the lucky ones; I still remember Mr. Wood’s class in Constitutional Law I took in 11th grade. We studied the Constitution a paragraph at a time, learned what it all meant, and then went on to several dozen of the more famous supreme court cases, even analyzing the backgrounds of the black robes on the bench at the times. That required plenty of trips to the library, lots of thinking, and even the county law library in some cases. Once we made our presentations, the cases were debated in class to decide whether the decisions reached were correct or not. By the end of the year we all had a very firm understanding of what USA was all about, and could see where government was overstepping it’s bounds even then.

Best class in high school I ever took.

  4. Loved Ann’s column - always on top of things. And in such a clever way.

  5. Hmmm...let’s see. Two foreign diplomatic officers in the US are married to each other, they are young adults, and they conceive and have a kid here. Is that kid a US citizen? I say yes. As long as they aren’t spying on us and doing a regular job, they are here LAWFULLY, by Treaty. This is OK with me.
Now, you have a young Mexican couple, they conceive their kid in Mexico, then wait until she dialates to 8cm or so, then they sneak across the border without the proper papers, and then she gives birth. Is this kid a US citizen? Not Just No but HELL NO! If they’re caught, deport all three!
Same with the damn Chinese tourist agency which arranges for resort births. The 14th Amendment is being abused by so many people all over the world. THIS HAS GOT TO STOP!
