1. The guard are going only for 2 week stints as part of their usual training commitment, and they will be fancified Jiffy Lube guys and office boys at that for the most part. The plan is to rotate something like 150,000 people through there. Putting the guard on the boarder is really window dressing - they will not be gaurding anything.

   That said, this issue is the tar-baby of current politics. Nothing Bush could have said would please the bulk of people.

   Mass deportations would please some few, but I can see the images of Mexicans being rounded up juxtaposed with images of Jews being rounded up in Europe.

   It is quite the sticky wicket.
