Geneva Convention: prisoners of war punished as a result of an unsuccessful escape may be subjected to special surveillance. Such surveillance must not affect the state of their health, must be undergone in a prisoner of war camp, and must not entail the suppression of any of the safeguards granted them by the present Convention.
The U.S. imposes a requirement on its captured serviceman to try to escape. These guys were doing an impressive job of what we would do in similar circumstances. My concern is that we let them get so far along. What the hell did they do with all that dirt?
Latest figures I heard were that some 5000 deserters are hiding in the US, Canada, and Mexico. They deserve a courts martial and 10 years hard labor at Leavenworth (sp?). I’m sick of this shit.
While in boot camp, if anybody thought it was too tough, we were reminded that the USMC means ”U Signed the Motherfuckin’ Contract.
As for the would-be escapees in the Iraqi prison, I say burn ‘em all in a mass funeral pyre. Tell the press it was a result of playing with matches, and blame the UN for not supplying smoke detectors with the prayer rugs.
As far as I’m concerned, the Geneva Convention is where they get together to sell quality little pocket knives.
OCM,desertion in a time of war is punishable by death
I realize you folks have enough problems on your plates down there, but if anyone has been following the Canadian media, they would know that for the past several years, the Canadian gummint has been kicking a lot of “illegals”, “refugees” and asylum-seekers out of Canuckistan. You probably don’t hear much of it since most of it doesn’t get a huge amount of attention.
These two cases aren’t draft dodgers. These people were fully enlisted and serving in the US military, WHICH THEY VOLUNTEERED FOR.
I mean, isn’t it reasonable to assume that if you are in the military, that you may be required to ‘go into harm’s way’??
Canadians in the military do. We end up doing a lot of “peace-keeping” work in “hot” countries. We were in the Gulf War and Afghanistan as part of the coalition. (Anyone remember 4 of our lads being killed and about 15 wounded when a US plane dropped a 500 lb. bomb on them??)
But I’m getting off topic. I was shocked when I learned that one of these guys was in the USMC!! I was also outragred when the draft dodgers from the Vietnam era attempted to have a statue erected in Nelson BC for all the dodgers. (Happily, that got shot down in flames.) If “Peanuts” hadn’t pardonned them all, they’d still be classified as criminals and Canada would likely have to deport them. A pox on them all anyway.
Canada and Great Britain had a ‘law’ that if you deserted during a time of war, you were subject to “Summary Execution”. There were a few hundred of these as late as WWII - many more than the US ever did.
Ah hell....last I read these guys were appealing and trying to go to Iceland or something.
Happy Easter.

Hey Vilmar, I believe the term is ...
Over Taken By Events.
BTW. I got up at my normal pace today at 1PM,
made some coffee, answered my email, started
chow and went to the stats ... HOLY CRAP!!!
My site meter is screaming. And they’re all from here.
Thanks guys, I needed that. What a pleasant surprise.
Now, I’ll look around to find out what happened.
Dan D, this was recently on the NZ edition of 60 Minutes (the US version, too, I assume, since the interviewer was American...can’t think of his name). Apparently, these guys have somewhat a celebrity status amongst the wealthy liberals there in Canada who I’m certain are providing all kinds of support, financial and otherwise, to these traitors and crybabies. The one guy, when reminded by the interviewer of the contract he signed, claimed he was “upholding his duty to not obey an unlawful order,” that order being going to fight in Iraq. That doesn’t wash because if he was truly a man of his convictions, he would stay to face his superiors and face his punishment. By running away he became nothing more than a coward looking for an easy way out.
I’d say that Canada could keep guys like that, except for the fact that Canada’s got enough problems of their own without ours moving in.
Extradite him, then throw the book (and other hard objects) at him.
No. Your contract (as an enlisted guy) is for “x” years.
Of course, if you “want out” so badly you’ll stoop to drugs, open homosexuality, punching out a superior officer--sure, you can get out. Usually, though, you’ll stop by Leavenowrth, first.
As an officer you can tender your resignation anytime. No guarantees they will allow you.
