the Big Debate, Round 1

  1. I caught that “Pokiston” thing, too.  Apparently O-bay-bay has been listening to the Voice of America’s newscasts.  I forget which anchorette it is that pronounces it the exact same way, but give VOA a listen some time and you’ll hear it.

I have to agree this format definitely made things a bit more lively.  I’d missed the introductory remarks, so I wasn’t aware of how it was going to go down.  MUCH more enjoyable and effective than anything seen since… well, a very, very long time, let’s just put it that way.

McCain’s verbal bitchslaps provided me with a few chuckles.  Namely the “I don’t even have a presidential seal yet” and the much more relevant “Oh please” remarks.  Obama, on the other hand, came off as the angry one.  For a candidate whom the media has essentially been calling a cantankerous old coot for months, McCain came across as the cool-and-calm man on the stage.  There were a couple of moments there where I thought Barry’s head was going to pop right off his shoulders due to the buildup of steam pressure.

All in all, it was still a borefest, but not so much so as any of the ‘88, ‘92, ‘96 or ‘04 debates.  2000 was an exception to the list thanks to Algore’s constant use of the “lockbox” reference and W’s consistent inability to pronounce foreign names.  Both just made those debates fun for the laughs.  But tonight was fun for an entirely different reason: things were actually being discussed.  Points were actually being made.  Issues were actually being debated.  For the first time in a long time, I’m actually looking forward to the next one.

  3. I can’t watch them - ended up watching the Saddleback forum on a rerun - will try to catch this somewhere.

I really don’t like either Obama or McCain’s style - as pointed out - Obama reminds me of one of those 70s era psych proffs - coming off as just too cool, too centered and oh so calm - I always wondered if they were a sexual preditor, a closet serial killer or just a pansy hypocrite.

And McCain, well, as mentioned a CD of John’s greatest speeches would be a great sleeptime aid.

I just notice (read Michelle Malkin first every AM) that Obama seems to answer his questions in a obtuse sort of way - he doesn’t seem to like to get pinned down to a real position anymore (I guess the gun ban stuff and abortion stuff - really is hurting him). And how is that talking about the issues and providing us (you remember us, the people who do the voting) with information and help to make an informed vote.

To me, the diff is McCain uses Obama’s own position(s), votes and words against him - Obama lies, twists, distorts and attempts to tie McCain to Bush (which the GWOT and Shamnesty are the only two things I know that McCain is in the Bush camp) when all else fails.

It is a shame that more people can’t see that a candidate who distorts, attempts to silence (NRA ads, Annenberg Challenge papers, etc) and talks around the issues - is dangerous to all and should never be elected.

The highlight of my evening was hearing Kennedy was taken to the hospital. Of course this AM hopes dashed, as he was already sent home.

  4. Did anyone else catch how OB kept calling McCain “Jim”?  Was he trying to reference John McCain as maybe Jim Crow?
