That’s Not The Way It’s Supposed To Work

  1. Yeah, I guess I would comply long enough to reach my firearm…

At that point, I would follow my therapist’s advice: two in the chest, and one in the head.

    I love my therapist… he’s an ex-Marine.

  2. More to the point, I just got around to looking at the current issue of “American Rifleman”.  Attorney General Gonzales is trying to get mere “suspicion” of “terrorist” activities to become sufficient grounds for banning someone from owning firearms for life.  No appeal, no evidence required.  Word is that Bush & Co. are backing Gonzales on this.  Anyone have more to add?

  3. Well Dr. Jeff, I subscribe to America’s 1st Freedom. (I’m a Life member of the NRA) This is worse than you state. The Bush Administration is pushing a ‘No Guns List’ in the wake of the Virginia Tech shootings. Under Bush Administration proposals, your doctor can place you on a “No guns” list for any reason. You can be placed on the list if you were ever prescribed Ritalin, for instance, by your parents. Again, no appeal. Seeking treatment for depression? On the ‘No Guns’ list you go.

The scariest part of this is that the NRA SUPPORTS it. I could be disqualified to not only buy new firearms, I’ll be at risk of having my current firearms confiscated just because I’ve sought counseling for depression. Note that the Virginia Tech shooter was at least under court order to seek treatment. I was not under court order. Yet I would be lumped in with him.

  4. The whole concept is scary.  Obviously no one wants a violent wacko to have access to firearms, but how is that going to be defined and who will make the call?

OK, John Doe has had some problems.  He seeks counseling and medication.  He is obviously a responsible citizen who wants to make his life better.  Dangerous wacko or no?

Now consider the Virginia Tech shooter.  Judged dangerous and sentenced to treatment, skips the treatment.  To take a line from the 9/11 reports, the whole system was blinking red, but no one did anything.  Easy to see in these examples.  I think we would also need some lawsuit protection for whoever makes the call as well as some recourse for someone denied firearms.

  5. Oh Gawd, I’ve just created the outline for a new and intrusive bureaucracy.
