  1. Sometimes the best vacations are close to home.  I enjoyed the two weeks we spent in a rental caravan at the Isle of Wight.

Or how about a Shakespearean play in the open air on the coast in Portcourno, near Land’s End (Minack Theater.) Went there once at sunset, with the waves crashing on the rocks.....and Shakespeare on the stage.  You can not beat that.

A week in the Cotswolds?  Punting on the Thames?

  2. I agree with Vilmar. Tunisia is cheap for a reason. A friend was raving about how good Egypt was. Thanks, but no thanks, those bums get enough of my money via foreign aid without me adding to it. I would sooner go to France than Tunisia! Lots of cheap holidays available Britain or in Europe. Tuscany is somewhere I would like to visit.

  3. I am no longer the world traveler I was - but I too vote for close to home vacays. Simply to prevent becoming a statistic.

Sad what is going on in the world today - and those who are ‘in control’ don’t seem to care about ‘doing something’ about it.

Good luck to your friend - and I hope that something works out for them.

  4. If you crave warm weather, fine beaches, great food and secure environment, try Israel.  Just a tad further than Tunisia but very fine, indeed!!

  5. I’ll add one other.

Last year, my fiance (suppose I should have told you guys - I met a great lady and we’re getting married) and I took two months and 9,500 miles making a grand tour of the U.S.  To save money, we slept in the car about half the time and I got lucky finding some nice work in Arizona.  We generally took secondary roads rather than the interstate highways, we wanted to see the U.S.

This is one beautiful country with great people.  If I only listed the greatest highlights, I could go on for three pages.  We’re already planning the next trip.

  6. Dr Jeff - congratulations. And I used to love driving around America. There truly is some beautiful places around here. And yes - the state roads and back roads are the best.

  7. Congratulations Dr. Jeff, that sounds like a great road trip for you both. I agree with you, there are more than enough fantastic places to see in the US. However if you don’t live in the US getting into the US now thanks to our peace loving friends in the Middle East has become a real chore.

  8. ”...peace loving....”

    Great euphemism.

Every time the Islamic world has set out for conquest, the Hindu, Buddhist and Judeo/Christian worlds only got peace by slaughtering the Islamists.  I doubt that this time will be much different.

I find the ethics disturbing.  If you do not execute genocidal policies on all Moslems, the Islamists will either kill or enslave you.  That’s the Islamic law and tradition.  If you don’t kill them first, they will execute their own genocidal policies on you.  If you permit them to live, they will follow Mohammed’s instructions and build their strength quietly until they are ready to attack you again.

In practical terms, that requires you to kill a large number of theoretically peaceful Moslem non combatants as well as the active Islamists.  We are seeing first hand how Islamist killers are born in the midst of “peaceful” Moslem communities.  We have previously learned that over 80% of “peaceful” Moslems support the violent Jihadis and Islamists.  Religious wars are basically genocidal in nature.

Despite my ethical misgivings, I can also see myself taking an active part in the ethnic cleansing of Moslems from the Western World.  My sense of survival overrides my reluctance to kill innocent people.

There are no apparent options to this.  If someone has a good idea, let me know.
