TECH STUFF I CAN UNDERSTAND …

  1. Ewwwww… Yuk!

Take it from someone who fixes Windows PC’s for a living.  The only good thing about Microsoft Windows is it’s keeping me in high demand and employed!  I’ve got 20+ years experience supporting thousands of computers in a huge enterprise environment.  I’ve seen it all!  So trust me when I say this…

At the first opportunity, BUY A MAC! http://www.apple.com/

    - ZERO MALWARE (Viruses/Trojans/Spyware/etc.) No need for Anti-Virus subscriptions.
    - Hey, it just detected my networked printer and asked if I wanted to download the drivers. After clicking YES it installed the drivers and son of a gun, that printer is WORKING! No discs, no searching the vendor site for drivers, no installing one driver and having problems so remove and install another.
    - It has the worlds BEST backup solution (Time Machine), every hour on the hour it backs up any changes to your system.  When your main disk dies, you replace the disk, boot with the OS DVD and tell it to restore from backup and 2-3 hours later you are right where you left off.  Saved my bacon 3 times!  Nothing even comes close on Windows.
    - iTunes never ran so sweet.
    - Holy cow, I just edited a home movie and burned a DVD and it was really really easy!
    - You know all that cool Open Source stuff for Linux?  Well it ALL runs on Mac OS X!
    - Mac’s are PC’s! You can dual boot Windows if you have to or even run Windows in a virtual machine. (http://vmware.com/fusion, http://www.parallels.com/products/desktop/, FREE http://www.virtualbox.org/).  On a Mac Pro with 16GB of RAM and 8 CPU’s, I have Windows Server 2008 R2, Win7 64bit, Win7 32bit, WinXP, Linux Ubuntu Server, and Solaris all running at the same time and I can still use the Mac to do stuff!  I use virtual machines like a giant test lab.

Don’t come back and say they are too expensive.  The Mac’s are priced the same as equivalent hardware in the PC world.  It’s just Apple doesn’t sell obsolete garbage at bargain basement prices.  The Mac Pro may look like a PC Desktop Tower but it’s really a highend Workstation meant for engineers, scientists, artists, movie makers, etc.  The equivalent from Lenovo (S20) or HP will actually cost you more and give you less bang for your buck.

Think about how much time you have wasted fighting malware and Microsoft bugs and paying for security subscriptions.  It’s like the difference between a Gillette razor and a quality straight razor or at least a good safety razor (with cheap blades).  You spend a fortune on fixing it and updating it when you could just be using the computer for what it’s meant to be a tool to get stuff done!

For regular folks who surf the web and use email, get a MacBook or iMac.  If you need more power consider the more expensive iMac or maybe a MacBook Pro.  If you want insane power and money burning a hole in your wallet, consider a Mac Pro tower.

If you just really only need web and email, consider an iPad, it’s pretty slick.  Enterprise companies are buying iPads like crazy because they can enterprise activate them and they are a lot easier on the eyes then a BlackBerry.

Signed, Not a MacZealot!  I speak from experience, I am like a Car and Driver reviewer, I have driven everything out there and I am serious, nothing beats a Mac!  I’ve installed, setup and run every single operating system made by man since 1982.

  3. Well guys, for the time being I’m stuck with a windows based machine. Actually, I should not say stuck. Thing is working fine at the moment but the truth too is, I have long wanted a Mac and have every intention of making my next one a Mac.
As I mentioned in the post, I’m not too terribly advanced where puters are concerned and feel my way slowly.  But for those of us who do have Windows (for now) I thought the link might be helpful if needed.
Until we know exactly where we’re going to be settled, we aren’t buying anything new.
    Decisions, decisions.
