‘Self-esteem has to be built on genuine achievement, not mollycoddling, which only harms children in the long-run.”
The “money quote” indeed.
Once again I refer you to Melanie Phillips book “All must have prizes” the teacher training colleges were taken over in the late sixties by the left and now the chickens are coming home to roost.
The next thing will be when green ink is banned...because it’ll offend the Muslims!
I am a processoring in Michigan and teach composition at a private university. Some of my colleagues feel red ink hurts the self esteem of our students. I say too bad. I use the color since it stands out. If they learn to spell and use correct/proper grammar, they won’t see much red ink. I am sure a student’s boss couldn’t care a less as to the color of ink used. It’s time to stop worry about student’s self esteem. My students know I will work with them to help them write better. That is all they need to know.
The dreaded red mark meant we got something wrong and where the weakness was.
Solution? A bit more study and research. We never saw saw it as threatening or demeaning or whatever else these new age educators seem to think it means.
