2. Yes ... the “free stuff” comment #7 is the most telling. Let us not forget that as soon as the Repubs got the Civil Rights Act pushed through, Johnson (D) came out with his “Great Society” program that effectively destroyed the black family and most of their self-improvement initiative. But also don’t forget that Nixon ramped up the welfare state just as much; he was rather Progressive in effect.

3. Don’t forget scrapping the gold standard.. Nixon was a good president, better than history gave him credit for, but not the saint a lot of people give him credit for.

   He was a first class scumbag.

   I don’t trust a man who talks about ethics when he is picking my pocket. But if he is acting in his own self-interest and says so, I have usually been able to work out some way to do business with him.
