  1. While the arrest was a bit over the top, as well as criminal charges, I can understand the argument about people taking the food.
Tesco has responsibility for the food. If the people picking it up get sick, Tesco would be legally liable. Under British law, until the moment that the garbage is collected, it is the responsibility of the person who discarded it. If the lady or her family get ill from eating their tasty plunder, they could sue.
Police were a bit heavy handed, however. They could have knocked politely, advised the woman of the ramifications of her actions, then issued a warning, maybe made her sign a removal of responsibility from Tesco if she wanted to keep the food.

This is a hard one to call.. However, reading the comment of the people on the sight, a lot of The Mail and Current are not too pleased with the capitalist system, are morons, or a combination of both, with the few intelligent readers often ignored.

  2. Doc ... this reminds of something. Just to show ya how screwed up things can get. I think you will remember the story. Guy has his car trashed in his own drive, calls the police who come and then inform him that it’s a civil case and not criminal. Do you recall that post?
Ppl seem to feel that the law goes after the easier targets, and I think I agree with that. It might not be true of course, but that’s the impression left by the system here.

  3. I’m not agreeing at all. I knew a person who was fighting his brother. Bad brother, on the premise of talking to him (was seated in car) grabbed his arm and blocked it by rolling up window and went down the road, reaching speeds of 60+ and hitting mailboxes. Police pulled him over for speeding. Said that dragging a person, since it was his brother, and he didn’t seem injured, was a ‘civil case’.
Police are afraid of doing the work, especially when some sort of danger comes with the job. It’s an unfortunate fact. If given a chance of harassing a lady with 2 kids in her arms making a misdemeanor or investigating armed gang members who they can see openly selling drugs on a corner, which one do you think they are going to do?

  4. I agree Doctor - watch The First 48 and watch them drive by drug dealers and prostitutes - all while ‘looking’ for their suspect - and whining about how dangerous and violent the neighborhoods have become - DUH!

But here in the US - there was a show on Discovery (or TLC ??? Not sure anymore) about 5 different ‘food’ eating systems - of course vegetarian was on it - but into the weird was the raw food (i.e. fruits & veggies about all), weight down (a religious based dieting system) - and ended with a Freegan - dumpster diving for all one eats.

I have always thought that the waste was a sin - we can thank government regulations for that - and there are ways around it - that is how Second Harvest got started.

But given what people throw into dumpsters - I would be very careful about what I fish out to eat.

To arrest someone is wrong - the street is public (I watch CSI and The First 48) - what a crock.
