5. Good writing IS hard work.  Even in writing fiction, you have to guard your flanks and rear, lest the critics pick you apart like a walnut.  And it is never easy to “hook” the reader.  If he/she doesn’t feel within a few paragraphs (or even a few lines) like your work is worth the effort of reading, then it is tossed aside.
