I take it the baggage handler was a bomb squad reject.
I take it that he once had a jungle relationship with Jane Goodall.
All true. But why would anyone put shit like that in their bag? If TSA were competent (snort) wouldn’t some machine or dog have detected explosives?
I wouldn’t put sparklers in my baggage.
As an experienced metallic-cartridge reloader, I flat-out don’t believe they “all” went off.
I also don’t believe anyone in the media (or the TSA)that was involved with this story would be able to distinguish an intact primer from an expended one anyway.
I don’t believe it either. I’m willing to bet the “all” that went off was no more than 2 or 3. I am talking secondary ignition though: primers daisy-chained from other primers igniting. A direct hit from a great big sledgehammer could probably set off 50 at a time if they were closely packed.
McGoo has a nice big yard in a rather rural area. He’s a perfect candidate for testing the “tube of primers” myth that Lee Loader likes to push, along with the “round nose bullets are dangerous under recoil in a levergun tubular magazine” one. And he’s expressed an interest in high speed photography. Perfect remote control project!
Just remember to use a double wall primer tube, like Dillon and Hornady do. And remember that today’s RN bullets are much harder than the soft lead ones of years ago.
I have a Hornady “Pro-Jector” progressive reloading press (the predecessor to the current Lock N’Load press) and I too read about the supposed “double-wall” primer tube “safety advantage”.
I can’t confirm it, but I can confirm that after reloading ~30-40K rounds on the press I have had only one primer actually go off. But it was one that went into a brass primer pocket really crooked and was set off by being crushed by the seating process. But I’ve squished or crushed many others with no result whatsoever.
(The one that detonated scared the shit out of me, BTW. Those fuckers are LOUD! - especially in a small room.)
But I could test the “tube of primers” easily enough - except I’d hate to waste the primers given today’s prices and scarcity. The Hornady primer tube carrier holds over 100 (120-130) when full. I guess I could just put in ten or so?
