The events in the first few minutes of the film, where Jim’s dad George is killed in the mining ship attack, weren’t supposed to have happened. Spock from the late 24th century tried to help the Romulans stabilize their sun, but something went wrong and it caused a temporal distortion that allowed the Romulan mining ship to go back in time far enough to kill George Kirk and change Federation history.
So, it’s not hinted at in TOS because it hadn’t happened yet. Voyager was actually useful in helping to explain how the effect can come before the cause. It’s probably related to the idea in current quantum mechanics that says that every “inflection point” or decision point in time generates different universes, one for each possible decision and outcome.
Fine. But the movie wasn’t advertised as such. It was advertised as a prequel to TOS. So it’s not a ‘prequel’. Good movie, so far. At least it shows how Kirk was the only cadet to win the Kobyashi Maru scenario.
A related note:
I’m in the middle of reading the second volume of ‘The Eugenics Wars’. The author has been very careful to adhere to recent history/current events. Frankly, Khan gets his butt kicked every time he sticks it out. And not always by Gary Seven or Roberta Lincoln. Though they do a good job of kicking his butt when he does present it. His fellow ‘augments’ fight him too.
A good read. I’ve all three of the Eugenics Wars series in pdf format. Hint.
Yeah they were making it up as they went along.
I dont buy any Trek where the Enterprise engine room is a brewery....
by the way, this just in:
William Cambell, who played god-child Trelane in the original Trek and Klingon Koloth, passes away yesterday at the age of 84.

The build up to this movie described it as a “reimaging” of the original series. Kinda like what the sci-fi channel did with that old show “Battlestar Galactica”.
I saw the new Trek in the theater - it was the last movie *I* saw in a theater… the music and sound FX were so loud it was hard to follow the dialog.
So far, this movie must be in some alternate Star Trek universe. None of this is even hinted at in TOS.
Which is why I refuse to watch it. That, and memories of the AFR* who lived, breathed, ate, drank, pissed and shit Star Trek 24/7!

Time lines, timelines. Alternate realities create alternate time lines. Excellent way to restart the Star Trek Universe. I think it was an excellent restart!
Macker, wouldn’t that be:
...lived, breathed, ate, drank, pissed and Shat Star Trek…
?

I’ll admit, I had my doubts about the new Battlestar Galactica. Especially when they cast Starbuck as a woman. But it was a much better show than the original. So far. I’ve not finished watching the last couple of seasons.
If this is a reimaging of Star Trek, I gotta admit that so far, I kinda like Kirk as the James Dean of Star Fleet, Spock and Uhura as a couple, etc. The weak link so far is Chekov. The actor does a good job, but he just doesn’t resemble Walter Koenig at all.
On the whole,
, I’d recommend watching it. Then there’s that whole deux ex machina in the form of Ambassador Spock showing up a couple of times. Especially at the end. But hell, the whole movie is riddled with time-travel paradoxes.Which is why I refuse to watch it.
Usually time travel will get you smacked down hard by Serling’s Law of retributive irony.
Chekov was a bit of an anachronism himself in the movie… in the series he didn’t show up until the second season - after the Russians complained there weren’t any Russians on Star Trek.
Unfamiliar with Serling’s Law of retributive irony. Would that be Rod Serling?
As for Chekov, yeah, but don’t forget, time travel screwed things up. I don’t believe Kirk ever served with Christopher Pike either. Spock did, but not Kirk, or McCoy.
Yes, that would be Rod Serling. Try to fix the muzzie problem by going back in time and offing you-know-who, and when you come back you’ll have a ten times worse problem with Zoroastrians or something.... and then a guy will walk in wearing a skinny tie and smoking to deliver a lesson at your expense.
I’m a big time Star Trek fan. When there’s a TOS marathon on the tube, we dig out the “Nitpicker’s Guide...” and have a great laff.
The latest Star Trek flik is a great way to continue on the series and not worry about timeline conflicts. I’ll wait for the next one before I give a final judgement.
Live long and prosper y’all.
I much rather prefer the ST fan film Of Gods And Men. It’s Star Trek without the politically correct bullshit!
Red Five: 14.3 TRILLION UPDINGS!
Like JimS I find the sound effects far too loud in most films these days. I tend to buy films and watch them at home these days. I did enjoy Star Trek. I thought the bloke playing the young McCoy did a cracking job.
I check in on “of gods and men” from time to time… I’ve been waiting for them to release it for download rather then just streaming. The guys at Star Trek: Phase 2 are also doing a good job making fan films. They even get actors and crew from the original series to help out. There is a bit of PC though
I dunno, having Spock chasing insubordanant tail (Uhura) for a sexual relationship is not exactly PC, is it?
